I always wanted to see the world but I've also always been too broke to leave my own city much less travel across the map. Now that I have a reasonable amount of financial success I'd like to partake on adventures in new lands. However, paying as little money as possible is a necessity. So for a person on a budget, which countries are the most affordable that hold the most amount of international interest?
Any tips on preferred travel and lodging accommodations will be appreciated as well.

It also depends where you are flying from. Sticking with your own hemisphere would be the most reasonable price wise. Oversea plane rates are killer now with the high gas prices. That's basically what shot my overseas plans for New Zealand next summer. But now instead I'm going to Peru and the plane tickets are considerably cheaper. I'm not complaining!

In the Americas Canada has youth hostels. Cheaper countries in the Americas would be further south like Nicaragua, Colombia, Peru and Bolivia. In those countries guest houses are inexpensive. In Asia Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos offer fairly cheap accommodation like beach huts and budget guest houses. Camping is an option in Europe outside the large cities. Australia and New Zealand have backpacker hostels that are quite cheap. Depending on where a traveler is based airfares can be cheap or expensive. Sometimes an airport might have cheap flights like Gatwick in the UK. Some one that lives in midwest USA might find it helpful to fly from either New York or Los Angeles. Having a student card can mean some discounts whilst traveling. A good guide book can give suggestions on budget accommodation and hostel guides are published too. Good luck in traveling for little cost. One guide said with $1000, 67 days travel in India or 14 days in Japan would be possible.

I would say Thailand is a great place for budget travel. Specifically bangkok, which has cheap accommodation for about $20 USD per night. You can find hotels from asiatravel.com or asiarooms.com. that's where i book my hotels.
Another great place is vietnam. food is so cheap! you can get a bowl of great beef noodles for USD 1. and that will keep you going for the whole of lunch.
hope you spend a great time backpacking! it's harsh but that way you see the real world, and the real locals instead of being holed up in some fake luxury hotel.

I personally would visit China or Thailand. I think that South Aerica is a good value for travelers if you are intersted in going there. Mexico of course, is also beautifula and affordable.
