Add an egg to make creamy mash! - By pure mistake I found that raw eggs make for creamy mash!

For years I have been adding things to my mash to make it extra tasty - salt, pepper, herbs, spices, sour cream, chives, onion, garlic - you name it! One day when I was mashing my potatoes I was away with the fairies and I was mashing them in a large mixing bowl. I cracked and egg into it thinking that I was making a cake(!) and I mixed it all together and it was THE creamiest mash ever - ever! So now, I always add a raw egg into the steaming hot potatoes, some salt and pepper, a little butter and milk and everyone loves my mash!So what are your mashed potato secrets? - what are your favourite additives?

You can make KFC style mash by using 'deb' potato - dried potato flakes that you mix with water to reconstitute. The gravy that KFC makes is a different story though - not so sure of the 11 herbs and spices that they use!

I like to mix ranch dressing in mine...I have never tried cooking it in the potatoes, but I usually stir it in after I make my plate. You should try it some time.

Hrmm, I actually don't know what ranch dressing is - being from Australia I believe we don't have it. Is it a white sauce based condiment - I have always thought it must be something like mayonaise?

Ranch dressing is a condiment made of buttermilk or sour cream, mayonnaise, minced green onion, garlic powder, and other seasonings mixed into a sauce. I use ranch on all sorts of stuff. I like Ranch on my French Fries, salad, mashed potatoes, and I like to sprinkle the dry powder that you can buy on my chicken or dunk chicken nuggets in it.

Using chicken broth is nice, especially when you want to serve it under a casserole or under some beef goulash. You can also add the raw egg to make it creamy in that instance too. An all time favourite would have to be bacon - I love bacon, cheese and sour cream.

I like to make my mashed potatoes in different ways depending on what I am having them with. I have never tried an egg in them. I will have to try it that way next time I make them. I normally do butter, milk, salt and pepper if I am making them to go with a gravy. Otherwise I like to add some cheese, sour cream, and bacon. Or I also like them with roasted garlic in them.

Oh wow, an egg huh? I make some mashed potatoes from a recipe I found on AllRecipes and it is the creamiest I've ever had. Funny thing is it uses melted butter and hot milk. I always comes out so creamy, delicious and rich. But it does not include egg...I wonder what it'll taste like if I try adding an egg to this recipe. Thanks for the idea!

My grandmother always said that you need to make the milk and the butter the same temperature as the potatos before you add it so that you get thick and creamy mash so I like to do that too! Add a raw egg to the already creamy mash and you have heaven! - well not exactly, but it is tasty!

I don't believe I am posting a recipe - just an additive to a side dish to improve it. Would you call mashed potato a recipe? Tell me what you think people - is this discussion pushing the 'laws' of mylot?

The taste of real butter over margarine is amazing! I believe a previous poster commented that margarine thins out mash while real butter thickens it and its totally true. Sometimes the simple things in life are the best - white pepper and butter is a good mix - add an egg and you would be set!

I had not thought of adding marmite or vegemite - wouldn't it turn your potatos brown? - I am not sure that they would look very appetising! But each to their own, I guess the marmite would add some flavour and some saltiness. I have put garlic and seeded mustard through potato - which is tasty and quick. I just now always remember to add the egg!
