I think it is anything between fruit and vegetable. But in terms of Botany it is designated as fruit. It is developed from ripeing of ovary from a site I got following information whether tomato is fruit or vegetable. The confusion about 'fruit' and 'vegetable' arises because of the differences in usage between scientists and cooks. Scientifically speaking, a tomato is definitely a fruit. True fruits are developed from the ovary in the base of the flower, and contain the seeds of the plant (though cultivated forms may be seedless). Blueberries, raspberries, and oranges are true fruits, and so are many kinds of nut. Some plants have a soft part which supports the seeds and is also called a 'fruit', though it is not developed from the ovary: the strawberry is an example. As far as cooking is concerned, some things which are strictly fruits may be called 'vegetables' because they are used in savoury rather than sweet cooking. The tomato, though technically a fruit, is often used as a vegetable, and a bean pod is also technically a fruit. The term 'vegetable' is more generally used of other edible parts of plants, such as cabbage leaves, celery stalks, and potato tubers, which are not strictly the fruit of the plant from which they come. Occasionally the term 'fruit' may be used to refer to a part of a plant which is not a fruit, but which is used in sweet cooking: rhubarb, for example. So a tomato is the fruit of the tomato plant, but can be used as a vegetable in cooking

Tomatoes are the strangest thing. They are actually both. I got this information from this site: http://www.cookinglouisiana.com/Articles/Tomatoes-Veg-or-Fruit.htm. It's a political thing! Who would've thought that such a simple thing as the tomato would cause such a rucus!?!

I think botanically it's a fruit because of how it's made up. I like to think of it as a vegetable, though. It's just now sweet enough for me to consider it a fruit.

Technically it is classified as a fruit but most people regard it as a veggie

It's a vegie, a vegie vine that it used to. It used to crawl like trellis but now GMO'd that makes it look like an ordinary bush or weed. GMO transformed tomatoes into different varieties like plum, cherry, rose and now the elegante that goes to McDonald's specialty burgers.

Well; I just read on a few sites and came to know that Technically Tomato is a "Fruit" . As such ;I understand that it is very beneficial for health -it has certain minerals as well as some varieties of Vitamin B . So ,It does not make a much difference whether one thinks of this as a Fruit or a Vegetable .

it's a Fruit, technically! - tomato fruit

So a tomato is a fruit of the tomato plant, but can be used as vegetable in cooking.. happy posting!

The tomato is actually a fruit because it has its seeds inside the fruit. However, it is commonly called a vegetable because of the way in which it is used.

This discussion had already took place here. Anyway Tomato is a fruit. Any thing that comes from a pollinated flower is a fruit no matter what it is. But we keep tomatoes, brinjal etc... under vegetables but they are fruits. Tomato is a fleshy fruit and its scientific name is Solanem Melangena
