Your friend is right. It cna also be a sign of a certain culture and a sign of a rite of passage for some! I am squeamish about pain and couldn't get one, nor would I want one? I donate blood and can tolerate that, if you have a tattoo they will not let you donate. But some people LOVE them!

I have two tatoos One is a bird another is a tiger. I do not know the real reason everyone gets tatoos. I do love art, and do like to express freedom, and the things that I love.

I have three tattoos which I had done, firstly, because I wanted to experience what it felt like to have one done and, secondly, because I thought they would look good. I am at a point where I want another one to symbolize my current point in time and to represent all the experiences that I have had in the last ten since my last tattoo. So, in a way, my tattoos are also like a timeline of life much like the "bayern tapestry" except they do not follow on one after the other :D

People get tatoos for all different reasons, some because they enjoy art like you said and it is a way of expressing themselves, other like to have a memory of possibly a lost one or even a tatoo to mark a new beginning or change in their life. So many different reasons for so many people, and that is what makes tatoos so special because there is always a story behind each and everyone.
