Like I don't have enough going on in my limited space here, I had to play with something new.
I bought a cantaloupe last week and decided to save some of the seeds to try planting another time. I washed them, let them dry thoroughly and put in a little container to save for next year.
On a whim, I decided to plant one and see if it would germinate. I really didn't think it would, because it just came out of the fruit a few days ago.
Well the joke is on me. I planted ONE seed on June 24th and it sprouted yesterday. Five days!
I honestly don't think it would do anything as I stuck it in the ground behind my sugar snap peas. It's in an area where the soil is very clay-like and directly under the gutter that leaks, so will be very wet, both things that melons don't like. But what the heck, it sprouted under adverse conditions, so who knows? My sugar snap peas are producing now, so once they're gone maybe I can fix this area a little better, make a mound for the cantaloupe baby, etc.
Have you ever planted anything on a whim, not expecting it to amount to anything, and was pleasantly surprised?

Last summer I threw some acorn squash seeds on the side of the shed that did not have herbs growing on it. I did not even really plant them. I just tosses them over there. I figured that one of the peafowl would eat them. About a week later we had acorn squash plants all over the place. It was too late in the summer to be planting stuff though, so they did not produce any squash. They did blossom though.

You know, we can spend all the time in the world planting and caring for our plants but when it comes down to it, nature's way is probably the best.
Birds and other creatures carry off and deposit seed, and others just fall from the original plant and continue for another generation.

My DH does this all the time. But he has never tried to plant it the same year. That's too funny. Usually he saves them on the counter and then forgets what they are. He has planted seeds before and never knew what was going to grow. LOL

I just do goofy stuff like that sometimes on a whim, not really expecting anything from it.
I have plenty of seeds, so it's not like I wasted any money or resources. It just seemed like the thing to do at the time!
