don't be misunderstood it is and old saying in this virtual world, which shows the anonymity on the internet. today more people reveal their real identity on the internet. there are lots of personal blog, which show their real life. on mylot, many user use their own pictures as tehir avatar (including me ). they use their real name for user name. so, do you think the saying is still relevant today?

hello there, i think in some point such saying is still relevant but majority of internet users no longer practice such way, in fact i have a friend who gets problem coz of her identity being found by someone who is a bit obsessed about her and that caused her some trouble. i tried my best not to give my real name nor information while i am here coz this is a different world and i would like my private life be kept private. you dont know what kind of people you will interact with and it is safer that you are aware of the consequences of the stuff you are doing online. last month there is kid who killed herself coz of myspace account and it is pretty sad coz it shouldnt be like that (tragic), i saw a lot of commercial informing kids specially teenagers to be very careful using the internet coz you dont know what you will get in the end. i know i have some blogs in the past but i dont use my real name there and just keep a profile that is not really me, though i am truthful when i give advice or take part to any discussion there is. anyway, i still want to keep such saying true in my part as i feel safer that way. have a good one! takecare

hi jairgirl, yes you're right. what happened to the kid is so sad. i think it's not wise to reveal our real identity unless it's necessary for us to do that (maybe for legal or administrative purpose). thx for responding

yeah, it is not good at all. some talk show and news out here suggest that we should be careful on what we do online i think that is why myspace and facebook have changed some of their guidelines coz of this. anyway, it is always best to be cautious and keep a lot of your stuff to yourself and to your close friends and or family that way you can protect yourself from harm and or future harm. takecare

The internet is a wonderful thing and you can use it anyway you like. If you want to market something then the internet can hook you up with suppliers and buyers; in which case, you would need to publish your details. You could always lie and scam people but that would not be a good thing for long term activities.

yes, in that case of course we have to publish our detail. in making money online, we have to submit our real identity to the site we join. btw do you think we can always account on their privacy policy? thx for responding

From my friend list alone majority of them are not using their true photo or name and that include me. It doesn't matter for me who they are but what they do, say or write. Here in myLot, I have high regards to dogs, cats, objects as well as people like you. So with your saying I don't think its still relevant.

No need to reveal your actual identtiy if you desire so. That is the option web providers give to users. They don't expect either. Let you be a dog and I be a cat. Or if you want to reverse, OK. We play virtual games and live virtually. I have used my real name. But Avatar, is my favorite cartoon.

Internet, i call it as a double sided weapon.. it must be used with utmost care. Like you said, there are lot of scams going around here.. and the gullible fall a easy prey.. What i feel is the phenomenon of "Caveat emptor", applies to using of Internet also.
