Which purse/bag is safe?

Considering you have your wallet and everything in there, one would say it is less easy to pull a backpack of than a handbag of some kind. On the other hand, it's on your back and you can't see if someone touches it or tries to get something out of it.
There are also hipbags that are in front of you and that makes them pretty safe I guess, but there is not much storage space in them and it can be tricky to get them to fit over (or under) your coat. When putting them underneath it looks a bit odd and above it sometimes doesn't fit when you have a thick coat.
What ither alternative is there, what's the savest way to transport your wallet, etc?
