Is it possible to make money by telling stories?

Yesterday, I wound up telling two stories, a original story from my own life and a traditional European folk tale, at a gathering of people and one woman suggested that I join an association of storytellers. I presently just use stories to illustrate concepts a and to attempt to heal clients in counseling sessions and rarely tell them to others that I meet. I am wondering... Is it possible to make money by telling stories? Have you ever done it? If so, how? Do you know of any organizations for storytellers in California?
