I rescued a 3 year old female Chihuahua this past weekend. My main concern with her is that she weighed in at 14.5 pounds ... According to all that I have read, 9-11 pounds should be the maximum weight. What types of things do I need to do to help her shed some of this weight ??? She also has what appears to have dry itchy skin and a noticeable odor ... Bathed her last night and today the smell is back ... Any suggestions for either ... ???

You will have to keep giving her a bath and yes dawn soap is real good it will kill the smell , but in a safe way . You may wanna pick up a puppy spray too . I would say change her diet to hard food for a bit and take her for walks .

First of all, does she actually look fat to you? Or are you only going by the numbers in the books you read? She could be a cross breed or just larger than normal. I would take her to a vet to get the skin and smell checked out (could be signs of a skin infection) and just get a general once over if you don't know her history. You can ask the vet then if she is an okay size. For now, feed her the recommended amount of dry dog food for her present size (unless she is obviously overweight, in which case use the recommendation for a dog of 10-12 pounds)and make sure she gets excercise. You don't want the weight to come off too fast, because it can be bad for the dog's metabolisim.
Good Luck.

I have chihuahua's get her active like taking her for walks and things of that nature. There is a product for dog that have dry itchy skin because I had to use it once if I remember what it is I'll hit here again and let you know. Have you taken the dog to the vet to see how old she is? She may have ear mits and well with older dogs they began to smell a little. Do you let her outside to play? I know when mine go out and come in they have this smell about them but after they are in for a few the smell goes away. But if that isn't the case take her to the vet or call and see if they may have an idea.

well i'm not sure what to do about the odor. but for the weight i would just find out how much a dog that size should eat per day. it usually tells you on the bag of dog food. only feed the dog the amount shown and try to take it out for some good long walks every day. it should naturally go down in weight some. i think that weight is just a guideline too somewhat. i've seen all different dogs that are different sizes then what they are supposed to be yet not really overweight.

I just had to ask this.. is there such a thing as an overweight chihuahua??? Gosh! i think it's best to bring her to vet so they can assess if she needs to go on a diet or something The vet will also be able to suggest food the dog can and cannot eat as well as a soap maybe for her odor.
Hope the dog loses a little weight.

bathe her again with some baking soda in the bathwater and it
'should take care of the odor. feed her only what a dog of 9 to 11 pounds should eat and get her outside for some daily
exercise too. you could even sprinkle a little baking soda into her fur and comb it out as baking soda is a great odor getter rid of odors.

It does depend on whether she is a full Chihuahua or a mix. Ours is a rescue dog as well, but he has some Jack Russell terrier in him too, so the vet said that his 14.5 pounds is perfect for his size. The advice you've already gotten for bathing should work.
