Is it Ok to Legalize Marijuana?

I do understand that the state of California is at the verge of legalizing marijuana, is it a good idea? Why should this be coming now when America is trying to fight drug trafficking, going by the recent press reports, they have given upto $400,000,000 to Mexico to check their borders-why should this come now?
