Your check number

Most banks don't ask you what you want your check numbers to start with. They usually start a new personal account with check number 101 and new business accounts starting with 1001.
Did you know you can choose what you want your check number to start with?
Merchants know that checks with low check numbers are fairly new accounts and this will sometimes trigger a request for additional identification. When your banker starts your account, ask them for a higher starting number and you can sometimes reduce the frequency of these requests.
When I move and have to start a new checking account, I request a number at least a few hundred higher than my previous account had. This makes it easier to distinguish during the transition period.

I did not know that. I have a checking account and never had a problem with identification. There are a few establishment that accept checks to it does not matter how high the check number is. It will be no good if check is not acceptable as payment.:)

I knew that you could request your check number when opening a new account. I just tend to forget when I do open a new account. That is a good idea about using a couple of hundred higher on the new account so that it made it easier during the transition period. Thanks for sharing.

I can't remember the last time I wrote a cheque, what with debit card payments and pre-authorized automatic withdrawal, not to mention online banking.
