My son is 24 now, but we home schooled from 4th through 12th grade. Normally, we took about 2 weeks off in the summer. Never more. And even then, if we were vacationing somewhere, most likely we would still be studying and learning - about the area, about animals and birds in the area, visiting museums, etc. My ex and I always thought that the beauty of home schooling was that everything was a teaching opportunity.

That is fantastic. I have three, but all they want to do is tv and computer games. So now tv 1 hour on weekends only. Im trying out unschooling during the summer, but not to drastic. They must read , write and do math every day.

In the summer, we did a lot of crazy things. Like taking a magnifying glass out to the back yard and watching the ants at work. Or taking a metal detector to the beach. Even during the "regular" school year, my son usually got all of his required school work done in the morning, then read in the afternoon. TV was not an option, unless he was watching the History Channel, or Discovery Channel or something like that.

No!, I do not school year round as far as books go. as far as my kids learning from me daily, yes I do. I need a break just as they do, so when we bring out the books it is usually from Sept to May.

My 8-yr-old homeschooler tells people that we homeschool in the summer, but it is "fun homeschool." Yes, we go year around. This summer we did math because she has problems with it and I wanted to review and keep it consistent. The rest of the time was learning from whatever opportunity presented itself.
