Your government at work, keeping oil prices high and us dependent on foreign oil

Hello All,
Skyrocketing fuel prices are certainly on everyone's mind. What's worse is that we are teetering on a very painful economic recession unless those fuel prices are brought back down.
Congress has subpoenaed the Oil Giants several times to answer loaded questions about their record breaking profits. Yet, Congress has conveniently left out all mention of their culpability in this looming economic disaster.
First, we all know that the federal gov't tacks on 18 cents per gallon of fuel purchased.
Though, did you also know that the federal government is getting approximately 20% off the top by way of lease payments made from the oil companies to the federal gov't for the lease of federal lands?
Second, Congress (both sides of the aisle) have been asleep at the wheel over this dependence on foreign oil, and skyrocketing price issue. How many of our legislators have been out on the campaign trail for the past year and a half, instead of doing their job???
Third, Congress has picked up the mantle of attacking future's speculators for their very real contribution to sky-rocketing oil prices. Though, they manipulatively have focused on how to restrict traders by way of punitive fines -- which serves to feed the hungry pig (Congress), while doing virtually nothing to rein in speculation! Congress is completely skirting the real issue (oil should not be traded as a commodity because it is a national security issue) in lieu of revenue generation schemes. They would rather count on future 'fines' than to eliminate the real effect that speculators have on the price of crude (remember the man who boasted that he drove oil over the $100/barrel mark so that he could tell his grandchildren that he was the one who made history?)
And, now here's the ugliest 'black eye' on Congress in this matter:
Nancy Pelosi, and her minions are lying through their teeth when they tell you that we won't see any benefit from drilling today for another ten years!
The proof of the pudding is Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) Whose efforts from the beginning of drilling to oil in the barrel is covering a 55 day time frame!!!
Moreover, North Dakota is bending over backward to help the American consumer in this fuel crisis. They approved a new pipeline system to get oil from Canada and the Dakotas to the rest of the nation.
http://minnesota.publicradio.org/display/web/2008/03/11/pipeline/
They've also approved the construction of the first, all new oil refinery since 1976. Yup, that's 32 years since a refinery has been built in this country!
"Supporters cited the once-in-a-lifetime economic opportunities the $10 billion project would bring.
An average of 4,500 construction jobs would be required over four years. With the refinery up and running, Hyperion pledges to create 1,826 full-time jobs at hourly wages of between $20 and $30.
"I think it would be a great opportunity for young people to stay in this area instead of leaving for other states," Kelly Hoekstra, 31, of Dakota Dunes said after casting a vote in favor of the rezoning."
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2030124/posts
And, they've welcomed oil companies to drill on their lands, to the benefit of their own wallets, and the American People.
Yet, Congress & Dem. politicians are blocking them every step of the way! They're doing so with bold-faced lies and manipulative deceptions.
So, the next time you hear any Democrat politician stating that drilling now won't have an effect on the costs at the pump -- will you remember Pioneer Natural Resources, and the folks for North & South Dakota? And, will you remember the fact that sycophant politico's have been standing in the way of easing our dependence on cartel priced foreign oil?

Dang it start drilling folk, drill here, drill now. I do not think I could be any simplier than that. Yes congress you have proven that you can subpoene a ham sandwhich, but what did all of those hearing do to lower the price of gas. How about we start subpoening congress to testify for what they have done to keep the price of gas going through the roof. Nancy what have you done to lower the price of gas, nothing oh that is right. Actually since you, Nancy have taken power of the House price in my state over the past two years has raisen by $1.70, please explain that, Nancy.
If it is going to take ten years well we better start now. How long did it take for us to get on the moon? I think it took more then ten years to see that happen, but that did not stop us. I do not see why it should matter how long it is going to take to see oil coming out of ANWR. Could it take ten year maybe, but it might only take ten months, so what. Government has no right to talk. In my state the government has been working on the same section of I40 for about five year and they think they will be done close to next year. So it took the government six years to add another lane and build a couple of new bridges. They have torn up highway 67 for the same six years and they have no plans on rapping that up. There is two lanes and on each side has concrete barriers running right up next the lanes. For six years we in this state of mine have had to put up with this. So when it comes to a new government project time does not matter, so why should it matter with opening up some worthless land to drilling.
I heard that the opponents of the new oil refinery are planning to tie the building up in court. The eco freaks believe we are too stupid to do the right thing. No matter of the fact that a majority said they want the building of this refinery, these eco freaks do not want it built so it must not happen.

I have always thought it was a conspiracy. The government is out to make money to cover expenses on things what we don't need or their pay raises. So they steal from us by using gas as an excuse because taxes raise that much would be ludicrious.

Hello Baileycows,
It's nice to visit with you again! Thanks for stopping by.
Well, if it's a conspiracy, then I think we could deflate much of the nonsense if we returned to the day when the respective federal, state, and local taxes were posted at each gas station. What say you?
As for the thievery: We're told that taking money from one person, and giving it to another is not theft -- if it's done by government. Ha, yeah right!

I have heard that another good reason for the government to let the price of gas skyrocket like that is because not only do the oil companies make their decent profits. It also means more money for the government from taxing those profits. Then these people can vote themselves raises with the extra incoming tax money.

You make some excellent points. However the Chinese are demanding oil and the the only solution is 100% hybrid cars in usa

OK, that went through. Now let's try the real response ...
Hello Shoffman2000,
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this issue.
If you are right, and "... the only solution is 100% hybrid cars...", then we are in very big trouble, indeed.
What about all those folks who cannot afford to buy a new car? Your "only" solution to the problem lays the biggest burden on the poor, who cannot afford to go out and spend $20K-$40K on a new car!
Oh, and by the way, reported mpg of both the Toyota and Honda hybrids demonstrates a lower mpg than I get with my clean-burning Volkswagon diesel. I have been consistently getting 49/47mpg for the past seven years.
Also, at last year's prestigious NY International Car Show, the "Greenest Car of The Year" award was given to a new Mercedes Diesel -- not a hybrid!
"2007 NY Autoshow: Mercedes-Benz E320 Bluetec Wins World Greenest Car Award. Mercedes-Benz is very excited that the E320 BLUETEC is the World Green Car of the Year. Distinguished as the cleanest diesel vehicle in the world, the E320 BLUETEC represents a combination of exceptional performance and comfort with grate fuel economy."

As to the hoopla about hybrids:

Subject: [toyota-prius] Gas Mileage Drop
Hi All,
I have a 2005 Prius, live in AZ.
I have driven 12,500 miles and have the car serviced at my local Toyota dealership.
The best mileage that I've gotten is 50 mpg. (Some owners say that their mileage improved after 10,000 miles on the odometer. I really didn't see a change. Anyway I generally get anywhere from 44-47mpg
with mostly surface street driving and some highway. (based on my fill-up on the tank, not what my readout on the car says)
On the last 2 tanks of gas I've gotten significantly lower gas mileage, 36 and 37 mpg respectively. I stopped by the Toyota service dept. and told them about getting lower mileage and they told me that he had two people that stopped by and reported the same thing that day besides me.
The serviceman said that it was probably the gas mixture that is being used at the service stations during the summer months. O.K..... Any other possibilities I asked. He said that if it was something else, I would have gotten some kind of message, indicator light, etc. on the car. I thought it might be the high temperatures we've had and that I'm running my air at the max, but I had the car last summer and my gas mileage was not a problem.
Does anyone have any thoughts on my car's performance.
Thanks.
Jackie"
