how to know the character i selected

There are 5 cards, containing the characters A,B,C,D,E respectively. I have a list of animal names, i can select any character from these names as my starting position. I move 3 cards then remove the cards (i.e. A and E) then i move another 3 cards and remove the (B and D),so every time i'll select "C". The list of names contains parrot, cat, elephant. How this trick works? (i don't know)
