Less space, more mess?

Ever notice that when you downsize your home you actually create more stress? I've downsized twice. I've gotten rid of things by the truck load and yet I still have too much stuff! By downsizing and donating my life should be calm, peaceful, serene. Yea, right. I literally had to climb over the vaccume cleaner to get to my computer chair. Why you ask? Because there is no place to put the stupid thing. It seems like the easier I try to make life by downsizing I just make it that much harder to find a place to put everything. I've got baskets here, boxes there, clothes spilling out of closets, half of which I probably don't wear. I even have three storage sheds with "inherited" stuff in them. And can I find anything? NO, I can't. I always figured a smaller place would be easier for me to clean. But I've learned that isn't the case. I think I'd be better off living in a big wharehouse. That way I could just put everything out in the open, and rollerblade my way thru it. I'd be able to see everything and I'd never lose a thing. Less space = messier home.

I do think the small the home the tidier you need to be. I downsized just over a year ago. I gave away almost everything I owned at the time and decided from then on I would live without luxuries or any possessions that are not necessities. I do seem to need more than I expected. If I am to have hobbies and interests outside of work I need to buy new equipment, then I have to find somewhere to keep them. I try to be tidy but any available space does seem to fill up fast. I'm lucky I have storage space so I don't need to keep falling over things, but I do know what you mean.

You sound well organized. I wish I was. I used to be. Thanks for your response.

OH goodness and here I was thinking how nice it would be to have a smaller place for us to live. Sounds like it is a nightmare. I also need to get rid of so much stuff. Sometimes I think it would be better to be the type to move often then would not have so much junk laying around, stuffed here and there.

Unfortunately, I've moved often in the past. Doesn't seem to have stopped me from acumulating stuff. Part of the problem is we've inherited things from family that has passed on. Some of it we just can't part with. So it gets added to our stuff. I feel sorry for my son when I'm gone. LOL He will not only have all my stuff, but several other deceased family member's things as well.

Poor you, Tess! My husband and I are retiring in the next year or so, and we're also planning on moving to a smaller place. Like you, we've inherited stuff belonging to three of our four children which they didn't take with them when they left home! I'm starting to seriously worry about where all this stuff will go, and I've even requested no more knick knacks and bits and pieces for gifts! I do love all those things, but it's going to be really difficult to find places for everything - and I've told my husband my books are definitely coming with us!

My son's things went to him. I told him he had to take them. The inherited things are from family that has passed on, box after box of photos, antiques etc. I had a storage space I rented for awhile but got tired of paying for that every month. So now I have multiple sheds on my lot. LOL
