Why does my dog chew grass?

July 3, 2008 3:30am CST
I'm not sure if it's a sheepdog or a sheep!! Whenevr I take her for a alk in the fields behind my house my dog taks some time to chew or lick long blades of grass. Sometims she gets so absorbed with this habit she'll stand there for ten minutes oblivious of what's going on around her. In every other way she's fit and healthy. I've seen other dogs do this, briefly, usually to make themselves sick but that doesn't seem to be her purpose. Anyone know why some dogs do this?

They do eat grass to make themselves sick, but I was also told that they eat it to settle a stomach as well. My dog was forever eating grass and she was never sick either, but it was OK her eating it, I did not quite like it when it came out the other end as I always had to help her out.

In the case of cats, it's to assist with shifting hairballs but I don't think that's the case with dogs. Perhaps it helps with digestion in some other way? Or it could be that your dog just enjoys the flavour! Mine have a nibble at the grass occassionally, but it's not something that they do all the time.

I think it depends on the dog. All my dogs would eat grass to make themselves sick. Our new dog grazes on grass all the time just because he likes it and doesn't get sick. My last dog was a big help in the garden he would go in and eat just the weeds; miss that dog!

I think that all dogs who are allowed to play outdoors will do that. I remember the dog we had growing up, and how she used to do that, then she'd come inside and puke it all over the house. That drive us absolutely nuts!! Yucky.

Your dog could be just liking the taste of the grass, especially if another dog has not long peed there. The variety of grass might have some fascination for her too, much like catnip is favoured by cats.
