How to make a cold house warm in winter

I know there are conventional ways to make a house warm in winter like putting the heater on, etc. My house is fully tiled except in the bedrooms. What are some ways I can warm my house up in winter without using the heater (I always have to leave the back door slightly open so the dogs can go to the toilet in the night. I live in Nth QLD so it doesn't get that cold however it has been getting down to 10C of a night. I have some large mats down to try & warm up the house but what else would you suggest?

Well, as I've mentioned in other polls, I'm a hot water bottle fan! I love sitting with my hottie snuggled up on my chest to watch TV - and take it to bed with me every night! Cheap, easy, and very comforting - and won't set the house on fire!

I have started doing that too - I should have also mentioned that my house stays cold for most of the day too - it doesn't reach 20C until about 1pm - 2pm :(

Brrrrr! I'm south of Sydney, and we started the day on 8 degrees ... it got to around 17, but it's now down to 10 (at 10pm). Can't wait until we retire to Darwin!

First thing, I would install flap in the door for the dogs to use at night. Leaving the door open is killing your ability to keep any heat in the house. I'm sure what you would save enough on your utilities in one winter to pay for the door. If you can't do that (like if you rent or something), maybe you could hang a large heavy curtain or blanket over the opening of the door to cut down on the warm air escaping.

I think I will try theblanket over the door but I won't leave it hanging too low as I have a toddler too...I'll let you know how I go :)

I have a number of candle holders that hang on my wall. They are nice because the cat can't get to them. When the lights are out I can see just fine with all of my candles going, and believe me THAT MANY CANDLES in one place really warms a place up!!! They were great during the blackout of '03 when lights were off allover North America. Just don't forget to blow them ALL out before leaving the room.

That's a great idea, I think I wll do something similar this winter coming - I'm in a rented house so I might just put the candles up high on a cabinet so my 22 month old daughter can't reach them
