What's your favorite 'ghost story?'

We've all hear ghost stories and legends. What I'm interested in is not the ones made up to scare kids, but the ones that are passed on from personal experience. Mine would have to be an experience my mother told me about. Her older brother was killed in a car accident when she was young (she was 12, I believe). She awoke one night to see him standing at the foot of her bed dressed in his suit and beckoning her to come with him. She said she was afraid so she pulled the covers over her eyes and when she looked again, he was gone. I've always wondered what he wanted to show her.

My whole family has always been a bit odd. One time during a family reunion the adults were entertaining us children by levitating the table. To this day I am still amazed they were able to do it. But during that evening something odd happened. The house was very old and had a bathroom off the kitchen. The door to that bathroom always swung open if you didn't have it latched because of the way the house was sloping. It would not swing shut unless you did it yourself. So here we all are, sitting around the table, no one even near the bathroom when suddenly it slams shut. We hear the water turn on, then off, then suddenly the door opens again and bangs back against the wall again. I think even the adults were a bit weirded out by that one but they laughed and said it was the ghost of a family member that apparently needed to wash their hands.

Interesting...so was that and isolated incident? Maybe it was someone just passing through rather than a 'haunting.'

My story is from my past, back when I was 10 - 11 years old. I had always thought that it was my imagination, but my mother assured me when I was well into adulthood, the place we lived at at that time - was strange. The building was typical military housing at the time, three apartments stacked on top of each other on opposite sides of a stairwell, and with three stairwells per building. We were assigned to the second floor, another family was below us - allegedly, no one lived above us, though calls were made to the authorities that someone was living above us, moving around, flushing toilets, etc - The police never found anything. My mother tells the story of spot on the ceiling in the dining room, in front of the kitchen. She tried to scrub it off, but it came back in another direction. She cleaned it again, and it came back, in yet another position. She left it after it came back in a fourth position and left it alone afterwards - she didn't want to know what would happen the fifth time ... She also said she would arrange the furniture, and come back to find it back to where it was before. For my own personal ghost story - that same building. I was always seeing figures around that disappeared suddenly, my parents saying I was imagining things. But one incident is permanently burned into my memory - I sucked my thumb for a long time, I won't say when I finally stopped that habit. But still at 10 years of age I was still doing it in the privacy of my bedroom. Or so I thought. One night I was on my bed, by myself, sucking my thumb, and I had the feeling I was not alone. Silly, I thought, I'm right here and no one else is around. I felt a hard slap to my face that knocked me off the bed. I grabbed on to the sides, thinking maybe my step-father had caught me sucking my thumb, but no - there was absolutely no one physically present. I spent the next year or two sleeping on my arms to prevent me from offending whatever it was staying with us.

Wow...some very interesting experiences! Really makes you wonder what went on upstairs, huh? Have you gone back and looked at pictures taken in that building? Any strangeness there? And the slap...at 10 years old that'd be enough to scare you into stopping, whether the slap was because you were offending it or not! Thank you for sharing. :)

Thanks for bringing my childhood memories back. I used to wonder about ghosts in my childhood. Our home was near to the paddy field, where my grandfather used to work and cultivate rice and other vegetables for us. My grandmother used to tell us that there is a ghost on the paddy field. The ghost wears white shirt and is too tall to touch the sky. When it walks on the paddy field, no body dare to go there. Eventhough it was a kids story, many days even now this ghost comes to my dreams. I am grown upto 36 now like you in the middle ages. but still have those ghost stories in mind. Thank you very much Lavender. Love to you.

Though it's a legend, you have to wonder where it began. Could have been a story to keep people out at certain times, or maybe someone did see something once upon a time. Thanks for responding.

Hello Lavender_Breeze, My story wa when I used to work as an supervisor for the cleaners and evey time I enter the building I felt some was watching but no one was there after the cleaner finished their work I go around checking and switching the lights off, one this night I was going about switching the light from one pillar and so on untill I came the last one, checked again all the lights were off, satisfyed I went go out the double doors when all the lights came on. I stood there wondering how could that happen, next minute I heard a whistle in my ears and a breeze across my face,no window were open becaurse I have shut them. I ran upstairs to when the cleaners and told what hapened no way I would back down, one of the cleaner went down and what found was all the ligts were off except the first one I swicth off. It did happend twiceafter that and the electrictian check it out could not find any thing wrong,it was creepy Regards Tamarafireheart.

They do like to mess with us. I think that sometimes they just want to let someone know they are there.

I really haven't had a ghost experience that I can remember except for a couple of wierd shadows, but before I can remember things, my mom told me about things that used to happened when i was a baby. she told me that i used to cry exactly had twelve and wouldn't stop until two in the night. She said it happends everyday until we moved out. She also said there seems to be shadows hovering over me and that she heard something laugh. I don't know whether it's true or not, but it's the only experience I have.

Thank you for sharing your story. It's interesting in that it's not one you personally remember, but experiences surrounding you, nonetheless.
