Making a choice between life and death

Some years before I read in newspaper about a real life experience of a mother during the time of Tsunami. It was the greatest tragedy that hit many south east asian countries. When the tsunami waves were approaching and hit her, she was with her two children. the small one in her chest and the other holding her hand. they were near a coconut tree. When she was sure that she must hold herself on the coconut tree in order not to be taken away with the waves, she had no other option but to but to leave her elder son to the waves. After the waves settled down, she was madly searching for her elder son. This news took me with tears and even now while sharing it with you. It must be a painful experience, but we have to opt between life and death. What you say? Please share your opinion and experience if you havae any.

It is a sad story and it's natural for the mother to feel sad or even mad and have regrets. But I think it's the best she could do in such panick time and short moment. It's better than to try and hold both children but then they all got swept away.

Selfishness does exist in almost every human being, no matter how much or how little it may be. But if we see the situation as she did that not only for the sake of her life, but also the younger child's life. She did save the younger child. If we see the situation from romantic point of view, we agree that she should've hold on to the older child. But realistically, it will be better to let go of the older one to save 2 other life, how tragic the choice may be.

The story makes me think of Sophie's Choice. The mother was in a delimma. She had the nature of seeking for life and the nature of being a mother. And she must choose one. That's why we call it a sad story.

That is so very sad. I don't know how I'd be able to do that. I know at that time a choice must be made but it would be so hard. I don't know that I'd be able to live with myself afterwards.
