I took this pic a few weeks back. I thought it was so strange. I have never seen anything like this before in my life! Did anyone else see this? I saw it two different days that week. The first time I was at work and didn't have my camera with me. The second time ah! I was home and I captured this pic and also a short video that I uploaded to youtube. http://youtube.com/watch?v=uCeGyJHBGzo I wonder what would of caused this? After uploading it to youtube I noticed that other people had also uploaded videoes similar to mine. Check it out and let me know what you think! The halo had a rainbow effect to it. I am thinking it could have something to do with the ozone?

I've only seen that around the moon. I knew it meant snow or rain, but I'm glad for the explanation by nmiller!

I've seen that many times, although most of the time it's with a camera. In meteorology, a ring of light around the sun or, more rarely, the moon. It is caused by the refraction of light by ice crystals, thus, in popular lore, a halo round the moon foreshadows snow. A coloured halo is a corona. Under certain circumstances a second, or outer, halo appears, which is fainter than the inner one. At times white or colored luminous arcs are also seen lying somewhat parallel to the horizon and passing through the source of light, called mock suns, parhelia, or sun dogs for the sun, and paraselenae for the moon. A single mock sun, the anthelion, directly opposite the sun, may be added. In general a white halo results from the reflection of light by ice crystals, while one which appears as colored rings results from the refraction of light by ice crystals. Halos are more brilliant and complex near the poles than in other parts of the world.

Hi Sweets If you are born on a day like this supposedly you will have psychic insights.. My Da told me that the night my mother was in labor with me that the moon was like this and I was born just as the sun was rising. I have my strange times when I know things! xoxoxoxoxo

I have seen this, and I have seen it around the moon as well. I don't know how to explain it to you scientifically, but it has something to do with the light from the sun and moon being reflected somehow through the moisture in the atmosphere. I have always heard that seeing this is an indication of severe weather moving into the area.

Yes I guess come to think of it I have seen it around the moon before. I guess it was just weird for me to actually see it around the sun. I don't remember if we had severe weather that day, but most likely we did because we have had a terrible summer hear so far. Thanks golden eagle!
