Can you help your local Humane Society?

As the economy continues to worsen, with the price of everything on the rise and more people losing their jobs every day, with some folks unable to pay their mortgages and losing their homes, more and more family pets are ending up in Humane Society shelters because their families can no longer afford to care for them. These are "no kill" shelters who work together to find new homes for homeless cats, dogs...even rabbits, goats and horses. Here in Florida there's been a huge increase in the number of animals surrendered to shelters that are barely getting by as it is. Our local news reports on this problem periodically, asking people to help, and there's also a heart breaking commercial on television. If something were to happen to you, if you were no longer able to take care of your pet, if you don't own a pet but like animals, please help as you're able to. You can find the address of your local Humane Society if you type your county and state, or just your state, followed by humane society in any search engine. I promise you that they will appreciate any amount that you can afford to send. If you would like to donate something other than money and want to visit in person they always need things like blankets, cat litter, bleach and pet toys. These sweet animals have done nothing wrong. The volunteers who work at these shelters are true angels so help them if you can. I'm not looking for responses to this post. I just want to help get the word out because the situation is getting dire for some of these shelters and, if they're forced to close their doors, many family pets will have no options left.

I've upped my donations to our local shelters. They've been marking down dogfood at the local stores a lot recently, I'm assuming because people aren't buying it, so I've been buying a couple of bags each time (they mark it down a LOT) and send them to the shelters. I've also been sending them a lot of the pet medications that my pets can't use or that are about to expire to them. Things aren't bad once they expire, usually, but I figure that they'll be able to use them before they go bad and I can, currently, afford to repurchase it, if needed. I've cut and sewn up about fifty old comforters that people donated to me into dog blankets. It cost me nothing but thread and binding tape (a total of about $20 for over 200 beds) and the people at the shelters were ecstatic. I've also been donating coupons for litter, petfood, and that sort of thing, as I can. I feel so horrible for the shelters that are just overrun with animals, and I feel even worse for people that have had to turn in their family pets, knowing that they'll probably be put down, because of the economy. I try to do my part for both sides.

I like your idea about the dog blankets and that's something that I could probably do, too, along with sending them coupons...I never thought of that! Thanks for having such a big heart.
