Microbes such as salmonella aren't the only things that can be found on prepackaged salad greens. One woman actually found a live frog nestled in her prewashed greens. The kindly woman didn't kill the stowaway in her dinner. She rescued the traveler and chucked the chow.

The eastern dwarf tree frog is recuperating at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary's community hospital on the Gold Coast.

Tell me how a frog could survive going through the wash they put the food through, through the conveyer belt to be put in packages, packaged in cellophane and live in there for no telling how long? There would be no air for the frog to breath and I think they need that. If you go to Snopes.com, you will find several of these incidents reported, and none of them really confirmed. It is always a different place, a different salad company. Besides, the news release wrongly names the place of origin as Mexico when in fact it is packaged in Europe. I think these are all a hoax by someone wanting attention.

Maybe, maybe not, but the greens were packaged with an amount of air, and the little frog's lungs are not big. Also, as it isn't a mammal, the food requirements were not great.

It was in the package for four to five days. It did require medical care, then again, frogs are known to hibernate for months with out food in shady places. Spade foot toads of Arizona can last for years within holes in the ground, as can African desert frogs and toads.

I don't buy prepackaged salad either because it is simply too expensive. Now, I realize my budget decision is probably keeping me safer than the buyers of that stuff. It is also so easy to just cut up a little gem lettuce yourself that is about half the price of a precut bag.
