I once purchased some early baseball player photo negatives on eBay from a seller who had good ratings, that sold photos, negatives, and similar items. When the package arrived, the postal worker had bent the envelope in half to stuff it in my mail box. I complained to the seller that the items had arrived damaged, and the seller whined back about how terrible it was that he and I were both innocent parties and that some postal worker had to go and ruin the transaction. For all I know, the seller could have bent the envelope himself! But in all actuality, the blame finally had to rest on him as the seller - #1 Because he included NO safe handling notices on the package (nowhere did it say "Photo Enclosed - Do Not Bend" - which would have tipped a postal worker off to "Handle With Care". And #2, sellers take full responsibility for making sure that purchases are delivered safely and securely to customers - which is why it is in the seller's interest to purchase insurance on items that are delivered through the mail.

As a seller, I am always interested in passing along as many of the costs as possible to the buyer, and I try to pass along the insurance cost as well by saying something to the effect that: "You buyers agree that by purchasing this listing, if you don't buy insurance, you won't hold me responsible if your item comes damaged in the mail."
But really, as a seller, I am taking a risk. Ultimately, when it comes down to a PayPal dispute (I've been through a number of those) where it becomes your word against a customer's word, PayPal is going to side with the customer (unless you have a delivery confirmation number to prove that the customer is just trying to take advantage of you...)
Although I don't always do it, I do think that it is in the seller's best interest to purchase the insurance, and I think that eBay even makes such a statement somewhere on its site. (Anyone have a reference?)
Thanks!

I have always have a good experience myself with Ebay. I have bought and sold. I have only had two occasions where I was let down and one was this silly woman placed a bid of £100 on an item and won it but never paid. I set up a idspute but she said she had emailed me, she hadn't and when I phoned the number on her profile she didn't even live there it was someone she knew, I relisted item and sold the folowing week but needed the money to go away with and had to borrow off my eldest daughter til the new buyer paid and the funds cleared. The other time was me buying something for £5 I could have got for free but didn't realise but my fault on that one. Ellie :D

I think many people are a little nieve to ebay and indeed paypal the reason for this is there is a general concensus of " i've not had anything happen to me so it will never happen to me " but then of course when it does happen they go running the the ebay forum distraught where they get greeted with sarcasm and unhelpful individuals who like to come to ebay and paypal defense oh and of course you will get one or two sympathetic ears.
I've been using ebay for going on 7 years now, when i first started using it and paypal it was full of honest people though of course there would always be one or two dishonest buyers and sellers, over the years i have watched ebay detiriorate to what it is today.
I have been a power seller in my time on ebay and lost around £500 through fraudulent paypal transactions, i.e. buyers claiming they had their credit card stolen and never paid for the item in which paypal refund their money, or by claiming the parcel never arrived etc etc.
This all still goes on today and ebay is rife with it, though now ebay have changed their rules, now you MUST accept paypal as a payment option which puts sellers at risk from dishonest buyers, ebay have also changed their feedback rules so that sellers can no longer leave negative comments for buyers, this has spawned a feedback blackmail culture for the small hobby sellers because if they get too many negs ( be it for genuine reasons or blackmail reasons ) they will be suspended.
I feel that it is not just buyers who get ripped off on ebay it is sellers as well and where as buyers have a little more protection sellers have little.
For me ebay has become more of a chore than a hobby and i find you get more stress with it than you would if you sold your items in your local paper.
All in all ebay is no longer for the faint hearted and ebay themselves are trying to phase out the hobby sellers so ebay is an approach with caution zone in my opinion now, shame because it was such a great site.

I was only ripped off once, when I thought I was buying an actual VHS movie, but it was a homemade copy. Naturally, by the time I went to live feedback the person was off eBay.
I have not been doing too much with it lately with the fees rising yearly.
I am having more luck with my local craigslist site.

It's a shame really as I have had so many good experiences on Ebay but think there are definitly fraudsters ut there as you do hear of bad things happening.
I once won some dvd's that never arrived but luckily I hadn't spent too much however I couldn't claim anything ack as it was under a certain amount. : (

You know, I've bought hundreds of things on eBay and I've only had a real problem once.
I have had minor problems... such as when someone sent me a book and it was missing 15 pages in the middle. The seller had no idea, apologized immediately, and bought me a book and sent it. I gave them good feedback as it was an honest mistake and they remedied the situation.
And I've gotten the wrong items a few times from companies, but they always corrected it.
My only real problem was that once I didn't receive a book I ordered from a company. I received 2 out of 3 books, but not that third book. I emailed, could not reach them. Finally had to dispute it, and I did get my money back through PayPal. So that even all worked out in the end.
I don't trust a lot of the other sites like eBay, but for the most part, I trust that eBay is fairly safe.

I bought a Burberry scarf that turned out not to be a Burberry's scarf. It was so cheap ($50 instead of over $200) that I should have known and it was a nice enough scarf that was probably worth what I paid for it so I didn't do anything about it. However, the guy who was selling the scarves did get his acoount closed down by eBay.

I have not been ripped off on eBay but I was ripped off in a web site partner of eBay here in my country, I have bought a lot of items on this web site from different users and in more cases I didn't have any problem, but once I bought a hard disk for $50 dollars, and I never got it, I was enough fool for didn't call first to the seller numbers and I just send the money because since I never got problems before I never thought I would be scammed, but I did, when I didn't arrive when it was supposed to, I called to the seller but he didn't live there, the funny thing was that he didn't stop the communication with me, he kept calling and saying excuses, maybe he didn't want me to report him, but anyway I think I was not the only one that was ripped off for this seller, because bad comments start to be let in his seller profile, but he was good for him because more people just comment they were still waiting for the items, after a time he disappear and I never know about him again, it was funny how he fooled me for long time and I didn't realize he was going to be gone, anyway after of that I always call first to the seller and I try to be sure they doesn't have fake information, until now this was the only once that I was ripped off.

I have never had a problem with ebay. There are some sellers that don't ship as soon as others, but I've always received what I paid for and received a positive feedback. I think it basically comes down to "you get what you pay for". If it sounds like a huge steal, and you can hardly believe you're getting something so cheap, chances are....it may not be such a high quality product as described. I made that mistake with a digital camera and have learned my lesson from that. It sounded like a great deal, so I bought the camera, and it was shot in seven months. Other than that, I think ebay is a great way to find things that you may not be able to find in your area, and at a reasonable price.

When you buy something on ebay its important to look at the sellers feedback if the feedback is 100% positive and the seller has over 100 feedback you are fine. Also when you pay with paypal they protect you. If the seller has 100% feedback and has negative feedback, you should read the negative and see why don't directly assume that you cannot trust the seller, no on is perfect and no one can please anyone 100% all the time. I am a seller and buyer on ebay for 8 years!

Well, I sold virtual information, recently banned on ebay, to people via ebay to make some spending cash to buy me stuff on ebay. Every now and then I get a customer who buys some virtual info about whatever and I give it to them, but then about a month later paypal takes the money back saying their credit card company said they didn't make this purchase and I am forced to refund them. Usually I have enough but sometimes I am in debt because of these refunds.

I have been defrauded on ebay.I bidded on a mystery auction and I won, then i paid.I waited months for my package, then I wrote an email to the seller, then everything went downhill;that disgusting person sent emails full of cussing and lewd comments.all they had to do is to give my money back;but they didn't.then more excuses got sent, then i complained to ebay, and so did some other people.this seller managed to accumulate -10 feedbacks because they wouldn't deliver.they finally got kicked off of ebay, and with angry customers with no refund.

Actually I have been blacklisted at EBay and I still can't get an answer as to why. One of the merchants said that I made a bid, won the item, and never paid. I told him I didn't make an offer on it. Ebay agreed with me but did nothing about it. To keep my good status I then told the merchant I would pay for it and they said it was too late. Oh well, I tried.

No, never...knock on wood. A couple of times I didn't receive something I paid for (actually 3 times) In the first two incidents, the buyer immediately refunded my money within 24 hours (in one case, I believe the buyer never mailed the item as it was an expensive item that I won for a fraction of the price and he decided to "claim" it was lost in the mail)
In the final case, Paypal refunded my money when the buyer could only produce a Post Office receipt with no delivery confirmation and insurance. The buyer build insurance into the shipping fee, but never bought it and the zip code he claims to have sent the item to wasn't my zip code. Paypal credited my account 3 days after I opened the claim.
So, knock on wood... no I haven't been ripped off and I've had nearly 1,000 smooth transactions!

I have been using EBay for almost 6 years now, both buy and sell, and never have had any problems. They've never been unfair to me in any way, and when I've sold a product, they are very helpful if I have trouble getting my money.
Have a great day!
Char
:-)
