When you write about Christmas, do you write it out or use XMas?

Hi, I know this is probably the wrong time of year to bring this up, but it kinda just jumped in my mind. When you are writing something about Christmas like for a discussion, or in a card, do you write out the word Christmas or do you use the abbreviation of XMas? I was brought up a Catholic and I was always taught that you should always spell it out because it was just wrong to shorten it and leave out the word Christ. I've heard people say that the letter X means Christ??? What are your feelings about this? Have a great day! Char :-)

Christ has never been excluded from my Christmas so I have always felt that I need to write it out...just to make a point, I guess!

Yea, I am a little sensitive to how that is written and I always have been! I just feel that our country is swinging to try to make me give up my beliefs and the beliefs of my heritage. I just will not give it up without a fight!

I write it out, simply because that's how I've always done it. However, I believe the X does mean Christ (or the first letter of the Greek word for Christ), so I believe it's a legitimate way of writing it. Technically, you aren't leaving out the name, you're just using a different language. At my school, the objection wasn't that you shouldn't shorten the name, but the belief that Xmas came from non religious people trying to "X out Christ". But, that's not how it originated. (Although, I suppose a person writing it now could mean it that way). So, I write it out. But, not because I have a moral objection to it. Simply because 6 letters isn't really a chore to spell out, and because it just means extra work explaining that you don't mean anything sacrilegious by using the short form.

Thanks for your response. See I learned something today. I got educated in the fact of the first letter of the Greek word for Christ. I have also heard the same thing that people that use Xmas are trying to X out Christ but don't know if that is really so. Thanks, Char :-)

I write out the whole word. When I was growing up I was also taught not to put and X in the place of Christ in Christmas.

Christ is definately part of my upbringing and religion. and, therefore, part of Christmas, too. I just wouldn't feel "right" about writing XMas. i always lower my head for a prayer. i always close my eyes for a prayer. i always pledge to the flag...even if only to myself. i don't make "value judgments" on people who use it. i don't find it annoying. i think it's become more of a shorthand way of writing, more than anything else.

hi, charray, i prefer xmas. i think it is more and more fashionable now. firstly, it can sent out very quickly. a few minutes you send out, the receiver can receive it at one. secondly, by this way, we can protect our global enviorment better. so, hope more and more people use xmas in christmas
