Even though I don't have children I can tell you my childhood experiences. At first when my parents told me to do chores they paid me in cents, however as I grew up they told me that I should be doing these chores as this is life. And they never paid me since then. Now I grew up, I fully understand that this is simply a part of the family contributions. And as a family, you don't always talk about money when helping each other.

I think children need to do chores, I also think it should start when they are young. Toddlers are able to learn to put their toys away when they are done. School age I started them on dishes, cleaning their rooms and of course picking up after themselves. Early teens was when I taught them to cook and do laundry. The only time I would pay them was if it was some sort of specail job, like helping dad build a deck, diggin out a garden or something not done regularly. But the every day chores were just part of living in a family and doing your part to help out. No pay for those daily chores.
