Listerine has been around for so long its like a permanent thing in this world.
I don't usually use a mouthwash because I never suffered from a bad breath but I've done it from time to time just for the sake of a fresh mouth.
Its a good idea because you can just eat something that gives you an odour you don't want.

I've found one way to help eradicate bad breath is to brush the back of your tongue when you're brushing your teeth. That's where a good deal of the smell comes from, according to my dentist (though I have to take that with a grain of salt, as she was trying to sell me a "tongue scraper" at the time). However, if that doesn't work, I'll chew some minty gum for a few minutes.
And if that fails, then I'll use Listerine.
