Take heart, I love guppies but they all seem to die. I have several neons and zebra fish a shark and an algae eater which refuse to die but the poor little guppies don't seem to hang around long.

Currently we have a ten gallon aquarium that we bought at WalMart. It came with all the stuff. I change the filter every couple of weeks. We set it up and let it run for almost a week before we put any fish in it. We have some zebras, florescent zebras, neons, an algae eater and a shark. We bought some guppies recently but we only have a couple left. We are going to have to clean the aquarium soon cause the water is getting a little cloudy. Right now I think there are about twentyfive to thirty fish in it. My husband just bought a used 55 gallon tank and eventually we will set it up so we can have a lot more fish and some live plants which we don't currently have. I would like to get where we can have our fish have babies. Right now we dont have room for that.

We got our fish at Petco and Petsmart. The shark is black with orange tips and I really don't know what kind of algae eater it is. It is just what ever they had at the pet store.

Well, if you don't mind if I ask a few Q's: 1. How big is your aquarium? 2. What kind of filtration do you use? 3. What sort of 'shark' is it? 4. What sort of 'algae eater' is it?

Don't give up just yet. It could be because your water was not right. If you just put the fish in a tank without getting rid of chlorine and chloramine then the fish will e affected. It could be that th4e fish that you bought were sick and moving them make it much worse so they did not have a chance to live. If you added too many fish into a tank that is not cycled then the fish will be ammonia poisoning. Take a sample of water (in a clean container) to your pet shop to have them teat it for you, they will be able to help you to keep fish, maybe not guppies, and you should be satisfied. I am hoping that you have at least a 10 gallon tank, (preferably larger) so that you can enjoy the hobby of keeping tropical fish healthy , it will lower your blood pressure to watch a healthy aquarium.

Some fish have been inbred so much that their resistance is very low and they are not as hardy as they should be. If you do decide to go with guppies again make sure to go to someone else and check how hardy they are.

How many fish are in your aquarium? Did you let it cycle properly before adding the fish? Did you add all of your guppies at once (or some other fish)? What kind of filtration do you use?

As has been mentioned, your tank is very much overcrowded. I use the rule of thumb of :find out the grown size of the fish and multiply the length times the height (in inches and not including the fins), this will give yo the minimum number of gallons of water that the fish needs. Some fish like the neon tetras need at least 20 gallons of water for swimming. Another factor is yo need to do regular partial water changes, a fish tank is like a house without a working toilet. The only way to "flush the toilet" is to do a water change. The water that yo take out can be used to water your plants. Also do not overfeed as fish are coldblooded and do not need the extra food to produce heat like mammals and birds do. Feed them only as much as the will eat in one or two minutes a day and do not be afraid to let them go a day a week without feeding them (nobody goes around in the wild and feeds them everyday).Take a sample of water into your fish store to have them check it out (you can buy test kits for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH) so you know how good or bad your water is.
