Cats Grief

I lost my cat who has four kittens when the kittens are one and half month old. I struggled to feed them and compensate them for their mother's loss. I have another black male cat in my garden who is guarding them all the time, whereever they move. Eversince I lost the mother, my third cat has been sitting under my bed very sad and hardly comes out except when I call her to feed her. My question, do cats sense your emotions and other cats emotion. Do they share the grief with their beloved?
