Whys It So Slow?

Well I couldnt figure out why my internet was so slow lately......well turns out my internet provider has a policy that states iff you go over your download limits or upload limits you get penalized by being knocked down to dial up speed. So right now im not happy im paying for high speed but get dial up speeds. Now as long as I dont use the internet too much it should go back to normal soon. So does anyone else have this happen to them? Does it seem silly to you as well? As soon as my contract is up im switching companies this is silly.

Oh yea, that happens to me too! It is so annoying. For me there is like a few hour time period in the early morning hours.. like 2-5am or something when I can download as much as I want, that is when I download large files. But yea, it bothers me because the service is so expensive to start with an then they put limits on it! What you described is exactly what happens to me. Unfortunately we live out in the country, middle of nowhere, and this is really the only internet option. At least as far as broadband goes, I didn't look for dial-up because we wanted high speed! I've been doing pretty good for quite a while now, but I don't think it's right that they do that! Since we still have to pay even though they restrict it. I know in my case, if I go over the limit I end up painfull slow for the next 24 hours! :(

Yeah we dont have much for choices where im at either. I dont get no free use time at all. I have to go by a rolling 30 day period so to get mine back I have to bring my average usage down to 70%. Should be fast as I havent downloaded anything in a few days.

That is not good. I would tell them if they do it that way then the times I am using dial up speed I should only have to pay a cheaper rate. I have never heard of one doing that.

Wow that's strange....you wouldn't think that they could do that....for as much as you pay you should be able to use it all you want! I haven't ever had a problem like that. But I still have dial up until I get things changed around up here and move my computer into another room...hope you get back to normal soon!

OH yes.. it the freekin Fair Access Policy. I have Hughesnet. I had to upgrade (and yes dish out more $$) in order to have access that won't slow me down to dial up. So far it seems to be ok... The boys (DH and DS) can play the shoot em kill everybody games on line and I don't get knocked down anymore.

I have never heard of such a thing.Who are you using for internet?Where did you get this information from?I am very computer literate,I build them and fix them for family and friends.I Have never heard of a high speed internet provider doing this.I would like to know who it is,and if I were you if this is true I would trade internet providers. I have WildBlue and they have what they call the Fair Act Policy. Doesnt seem fair as no one else does this. But I am in contract now so I have no choice. They want me to upgrade and pay more to get more but im not upgrading unless I get unlimited usage and they dont provide that option.

You have braodband? Some companies that give braodband have a limit of space to use for downloading etc. I have not had a problem with QWest DSL. try them in a package deal. cell phone, DSL and DishTV possibly? I know they do Direct TV but not sure about DishTV. Good luck. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM DADDY !!~

Qwest is not available in my area. We have very few options in this area. That is why I have no land line phone. We can only use Frontier and we hate them. These companies know when you have no choice and take advantage of it by charging you more.

That is a really stupid policy! I have never heard of such a thing and would be switching to if I had to put up with a policy like that. It seems to me that if you pay a certain amount for a service, you should get to use it how ever you want to.

I have the cheap package but even the expensive package isnt unlimited. I think that is just silly if im gonna pay over $100 a month it better be unlimited. I only pay $49.99 a month right now but its still not fair.

You're kidding? I have been wondering why Mozilla FF has been so slow lately. I just learned who to download from a music site for free and did about 30 songs from my "years" the 70's nad a few from the late 60's. THey downloaded fine and I neer thought about it. Then now that you mention this, it was just after this that mozilla started getting SO SLOW i think dial up would have been faster! I just shut down and figured this HUGE triple diget heat waves we've been having out here for the last month, might have something to do with ocnvertors or something slowing down and the fires up north literally burning california into the ground... but now that you mention this, I wonder if this download of hte songs is why. I have never downloaded anything like this so I don't know how it all works. How did you find out this was the reason? GUess I should call my provider! THing is, if it eventually returns to normal soon, by the time I call, sit on hold, go through their entire rig-a-ma-roll of "try this and try this then call us back", it might have fixed itself. But would be interesting to know for future reference. Interesting to find out.

This is really bad. I would never prefer such a silly company to connect to the net. I have never noticed such a problem in my life. I suggest you to change over to some other company.

good day.. that is the lamest policy I've ever heard. How could you go over your download or upload limit when your bandwith sets that limit for you. I mean you pay a certain rate for certain bandwith speed so how can you get over it when you're actually paying for that specific rate only? If ever by accident you've go over it then you shouldn't be penalize because they should be the one responsible for setting the right speed limit for you.

I've never heard of that. It's completely ridiculous. How are you supposed to know whether you have gone over the download or upload limits? Really dumb...

Yes, most internet providers do that when you've used up your allocation, so it's best to choose a plan with a big enough monthly allocation for your needs. We've never managed to use up all of ours, but I know it goes back to dialup speed if we do!

Im just mad that they never told me this upfront. Ive been with them for 6 months now and never had any issues till now. If I would have known I wouldnt be in this dial up mode.

That kinda stupid, why would they knock you down for downloads and uploads when you pay for umlimited internet access and a high speed level, that is just stupid of the company there going to get a bad rep if they keep doing that to people, i never had the problem personal but if it happen to me id be pretty pissed off.

Hi minnie, I know how it feels when we have a very slow connection...I have experienced a lot of that last month and few days that no connection at all. So, this time, I have no problem, I can access any site! I hope your connection will be working back to normal soon!

I think that policy is plain silly... and there is no such thing in my country... there is no limit download and upload... as long as one is paying the monthly bill... then the internet speed limit is the same... i think you should change your internet provider... they are like punishing you for using the internet to its fullest capacity...

That is unheard of. And, to my knowledge, we don't have that problem at my house. How long before your contract is up with them so that you can switch providers? That is really ridiculous!

I still have around 12 months in contract lol. And even then theres no other option for me unless i go back to dial up. And im not even in the country we just dont have options here for some reason.

Sheesh! I'm sorry Minnie! But, maybe by the time your contract ends, you will have a new option. You never know. Options are always branching out and extending themselves to more and more people so, maybe by then you will have a choice!

That happened to my boyfriend, because although he asked for broadband with an unlimited download limit, there was some confusion and he didn't get the unlimited download limit, therefore when he went over, he had really slow internet between 6pm and 12am. The only thing that I can advice you to do is make sure you have unlimited download limit like I have, because then you can do as much as you like on the internet with no penalties.

There are only a few ISPs that go that far. Mine allows unlimited use. It gets slow only when there are several people on my subnet all downloading simultaneously.
