Why do people think that Rottweilers are mean?

I own two rottie pups, the sweetest things on earth. I went to buy some food at the market and the owner asked me what type of dogs I had. As soon as he heard rottweiler he stated "the man eaters". I chuckled ironically and said , yeah they wil lick you to death. Yet I think he was probably not joking.

Puppies are always sweethearts and no real threat. Most times, people who fear Rottweilers only do so because of the many incidents where Rottweilers have attacked humans. Their are many factors involved in dog aggression from heredity, genetics, breeding, training, and treatment by an owner. Some dogs turn out fine, I'm sure.

I think people dont understand the breed nor do they want to. They make judgement by what they see on TV. I have 2 Rottweilers that are very sweet but they are very protective of my children. Have fun with you pups. Just wait until you have a 180 pound dog trying to sleep in you bed with you.

Awww your rottie pups must be adorable! Lovely dogs. One of my friends had a pair and she named them Thunder and Lightning :) Her 3 year old daughter used to take her nap on one of them every day and both dogs would stay completely still while she slept. I think rotties are a misunderstood breed, really. They are fiercely protective of home and family and people forget that they can't distinguish between an aunt or uncle or someone who's going to break into the house. The dog just knows to protect its home, yard and owners. Like any other dog, they need to be properly trained. I found an interesting resource put out by the American Rottweiler Club about the breed. Thought I'd share it for anyone that might be interested to learn more: http://www.amrottclub.org/rottweilers.htm I wish you and your pups a happy life together alessadry :D

I agree with you, rottweilers are awesome dogs, and they look cool too :) As long as they are trained good by their owner, they're awesome dogs. It just depends on the owner really. It's a shame dumb people assume so fast that if it's a rottweiler, it MUST be evil lol. -Chris

A cousin of mine had a Rottweiler who was about one year old, and he was such a sweet and friendly dog. He loved to lean on people and just keep leaning until they fell over. Rotties and dobermans always get a bad rap because they're often used as guard dogs, so most people see them as vicious.

I know what you mean. My rottie's are the best. They love children and I mean love them. My baby nephew was here today and he just started to crawl he was all over my dogs, and they were just kissing him and kissing him. He crawled all over them and I swear you could see them smile. Next time someone tells you something I usually tell them, more people are bit every year by Labadors, then any other dog. People think they are mean because you always hear about how the dogs attack this person or bit this person. They never tell you that the dog was chain up outside, or in a cage and has never been around people. Any dog is that situation will attack.
