Who is the actor that comes to mind when I say Sherlock Holmes? For me there is a tie between basil Rathborne and Jeremy Brett. Both were fantastic.

Jeremy Brett, easily. In fact, just yesterday, I was looking at clips of him playing Holmes on youtube. He's the guy that got me hooked on Holmes in the first place.
I only saw Basil Rathbone playing him for the first time maybe a year ago. They showed an old movie on TCM and I took a look. He was good, but not my Holmes. And, I didn't like the portrayal of Watson.

I agree about Watson. Basil's isn't that bright. But Jeremy's may not be as smart as Holmes, who is? But at least he isn't a idiot either.

Not Robert Downey, Jr?
Seriously, he's such an amazing actor, I'll bet he'll do great with it. I can't call to mind a different British actor to be a good Holmes. I just keep hearing a voice in my head of that distinguished accent!
I have never seen any other actor doing this role, as I see no need. No actor will ever be able to top Rathbone as Holmes.
