Err... any advice to avoid constipation?

I know this sounds embarassing but my digestion is not as it used to be. I get constipated every now and then and its really hard for me... literally, figuratively. I know that I have to eat lots of fiber to aid my digestion, but any other advices are welcome!

Plenty of water and a slice of papaya once a day will regulate it. if you dont have time to go to the gym try to buy a massaging device and massage your legs, especially on the knee part, front, back and upper part of the knee. I learn this from reflexologists and it's effective to me as I also sit long hours infront of my pc. occasional spa massage will also help. Hope you feel better soon. Cheers!!

This is a good input. I now go to the gym regularly (about twice or thrice a week) and the exercise is helping a lot. Your input about the massage on legs and knee part is a new one, though, but I wouldn't mind trying it out. :) Thanks a lot!

Oh, this is a new one for me! I like raisins so I wouldn't mind having them first for breakfast. Does milk count in instead of hot water? Do you think that would help alleviate the constipation? Thanks a lot biggerb!

I think eating lots of fibre is the way forward, but you also need to greatly increase your fluid intake, as when the fibre is inside your digestive system, it needs to absorb fluid to pass through you properly. If you aren't drinking enough, the fibre will absorb what little fluid it can from your body, yet that won't be enough for it to soften and pass through you effectively - it'll be too hard, and hence you probably would become constipated instead of it having the opposite effect. Try at least doubling your fluid intake, and if that doesn't work, maybe just have a little medical checkup to make sure there's not another reason for the constipation? I hope it cures for you soon.

Thanks CelticSoulSister.. I am increasing my fluid intake now and see if the constipation goes away. I'd like to try these kind of solutions first before going to the doctor or having an over the counter medicine. I'd want the holistic approach too. Thanks and i hope these helps my problem!

Constipation is bad once frequently happening to you. My advice is for you to seek medical help. Talk to your family doctor about your constipation. Maybe he can give you good diet on how to avoid foods that leads to constipation. You had a very sensitive stomach or digestive bowel. Constipation rarely happen to me. So I consider my self lucky.

It only happened this year. If this gets worse, then it's time to see a doctor. I may set an appointment this coming weekend. I need a professional advice on a proper diet that I can follow... I envy you lyzabelle. Wish my stomach and digestion could be as good as yours!

hi there!! usually doctors advise is to increase your fiber diet and fluid intake. another thing that you can do is to move around or walk to let that intestine move eventhough they have voluntary movement called peristalsis, however immobilization can attribute to constipation. age also contributes to this problem. as a person grew older the stomach becomes atrophied. a solution for it is to eat frequent small meals allowing the food to be digested first before eating another meal. eat lots of vegetables and fruits and eat meat in moderation. ohh i forget.. if your taking iron supplement this will also contibute to your constipation.. hope this helps..

hi bea_29! Yeah, increased fiber and fluid intake is the way to go. And I think what you've said about not moving around much would contributeto constipation. I am a programmer so I spend about 8-10 hours a day sitting in front of my computer. I have to hit the gym at least twice or thrice a week! Hehe... Thanks for your advice!

There are many things you can eat that will get things working, one I know works for a few people is a handfull of cashew nuts every day...its worth a try and better than some of the things you can buy from the chemist.

my mum used to give me a big spoonful of 'liquid paraffin', prunes, licquorice and plenty of water. Apparently there is a specific 'squatting' position that helps to ease the passing , as it were - all in the angle of the knee to body I think. Hope everything comes out alright in the end ;-)

Is this 'squatting' true? :) I'll find an angle that works for me... hehehe... Yeah, i do hope it works. Hmm, I like prunes but I haven't got the chance to eat them lately. I'll try it! Thanks! :D
