A lot of people are now using the internet to trace their family tree,to find out who their ancestors were and what jobs their families did in the years gone by.Ive never tried this at all,but I do know that there are many internet sites that will help you find your way.Im not at all sure that any of the social networking sites would be able to help if they were researched. There must be a lot of people who are interested in thier family heritage, are you one of them?

Genealogy is the fastest growing hobby in the world ruby. People are beginning to desire more information about their families. It's a most fascinating research once you get involved. I've been doing genealogy research for a very long time. It never gets boring and it never has an end.

What a wonderful treasure to pass down to generations to come. Scrapbook, family album, collection of stories. None of which should EVER be lost or forgotten.

That is a perfectly true statement Teri, there is no end to it all..my father collected a huge amount of photographs of family in the past, and hubbies sister has boxes full of pictures of their huge family over the years..all of which are lovely to look at,and because she has to some extent looked and talked a lot about the family in the past ,she can tell quite a few stories, which are some very funny, and others quite sad...but she has been collecting information for years now.

My mum has traced our family tree back to 1660. It is interesting finding out about the family and some of the names they have given their children. Some of them name their children with the mum's maiden name. One is actually called Kitchen, Freeman, Newton, Illingworth and Squire. (This are just a few that came to mind!!) I have also found out that somehow Im related to Sharon Jones and she has two children. A girl called Jacqueline born in 1960 and a son called Christopher born 1963 which just happens to be the name of me and my twin brother!! Spooky!!! I also found out that my step-nan has a twin sister.!! Its very intereting tracing the history but can be frustrating aswell!!

I would imagine it caould be really fascinating to find out who your ancestors are,it also could be a little scary if you were related to anyone who was infamous!!but its having that patience to reasearch the internet and to use all of the sites available.I once wanted to try to find some of my Fathers old ship mates ..he was Royal navy, and I joined something or other foe ex servicemen,to see if there was anyone there that had served on the same ships ,but its was so vast, the amount of information was really overwhelming!!

I am quite interested in tracing my family tree back, only because I want to see if I am related to any kind of Royalty in anyway. I have been reading this book and it made me realise that there were a lot of children born outside of wedlock within royalty and so the royal bloodline could be anywhere and I would love to see if I got any of it LOL. You can do it on friends reunited but I am not sure how much it costs as I know that it costs to do it through there. I am more interested in finding out the history of my house, but doing that is amazingly hard, I would have thought I could do it in the library but when I asked they said no and did not have a clue where I would start! My house is over 120 years old or more so it has to have a history recorded somewhere!

Thanx for that cinders, I would like to have a go, so I will look into it. I don't suppose you know how to go about finding out the history of a house?

No not the house itself, maybe go to the local library and see what they can dig up on the house or try browsing the net. I'll investigate and if I find out anything I'll let you know!!

Yes well somewhere the deeds of your house will give you an insight into the former owners etc..but re the Family tree,I had a message from Friends reunited and it was telling me it was free of charge to use now..whether that is true Lord only knows but its worth checking out.Im pretty certain that im not related to any Royalty lol but do you remember on the television, when Vera Duckworth was convinced that she was realted to royalty in Coronation street??

I know the internet is a great tool for researching your ancestors, but im more into worrying who I have to put up with now ,rather than worry about who was on the go years ago.I say lets worry about the living and let the past go.

If you go in search of you family ancestors there is always a chance that you will in fact come up with a rogue or two,its natural.Maybe the fear of finding that skelton in your cupboard puts you off of searching in any way?

Yes well it sounds as though you have done very well with your research,im afraid to say that the only ones I know go back a generation or two...maybe I ought to start looking more up on the internet.

It is very interesting to get to know about one's family tree and the internet is certainly a fast way to go about doing it. I had actually promoted this idea to a group of friends around 4-5 years ago, but somehow never got to go about implementing it.

I think that is the difference..thinking about it and actually getting down to doing it.and you have to be motivated and keep going,I think that dedication would be the word!!

Hi ruby, I have known our family tree mother side only up to 4th degree and for my father side, I have only known up to 2nd degree...I am contented about it so far and this time, no plan of tracing it.but, that is great when there are sites available to assist people about it!

Tracing the family tree can be very interesting and fruitful work but when my wife wanted to trace their family tree we ran into the problem of what software to use in order to facilitate the effort. There are a number of tools available so that your work will become easier. They do charge money for their software which is something else.

Genealogy software is readily available ,but as you say which to choose to use and buy are two very different things.I understand that births, deaths and marriages can be searched for at Somerset house ,but there are many internet sites that offer methods of search. The Yellow pages also offer a search facility, but it seems to be quite expensive to use.

I often hear stories about family tree from the elders and family members. That's quite interesting. Just like a puzzle or adventure. So I am curious about it. Our names are inseperabe with the histroy of the family, right? :-)

I have never tried to trace my ancestors, though I know that there are many internet sites where you can search for your ancestors. The inernet provides us with endless information on how to search, there are some free genealogy searching sites.Im not too sure but I think there may be a small charge to join the majority of them though. The idea is to trace your family back through the ages for as far as possible.

Always been a little sceptical over the sites that claim to find or rather help you find long lost relatives. For a start do we really want to find them?we are enever going to know them as such,we are just going to find out a little about how thety lived, and what if their lifestyle doent fit snuggly into what we feel comfortable with I ask you?what if one of our ancestors turns out to be a real toe rag?do we shove it under the carpet or do we brave it out. Some of these sites on the internet only charge a token fee for helping to trace our ancestry but there are some that are way above the amount I would feel comfortable paying.
