Is the internet really safe?

July 10, 2008 8:27am CST
I would like to discuss how safe the internet actually is in terms of hackers, internet banking, personal details etc. I mean we could be at risk now, using internet banking is dangerous?

Only if you use it correctly. Like, some sites will auto download viruses and the such, BUT, actions like the one I pointed out above will prevent such actions from ever happening. The other option, of course, is to just ONLY visit sites you trust lol. -Chris

I think that it is important to be cautious. Most legitimate site are just that, legitimate. A few times you hear about them being hacked, but I think the majority of risks come from sites like facebook where people feel comfortable so they post information that is sensitive. I don't feel that internet banking is dangerous as long as you protect your password and username and all the other security information. Probably the biggest risk actually comes from spyware on your computer like keyloggers.

To be perfectly safe, make sure you don't have any viruses or the such on your computer, obviously, spyware or keyloggers being the worse to have lol. As long as you know you don't have these, you're good. Oh yea, for security reasons though, make sure you logoff when you're done at the bank :) -Chris

I think the internet is safe as long as you watch out what you are doing. If you are adding people you dont know onto your msn or yahoo or whatever you use to communicate with people asnd letting them send you things to your computer that could have a potential virus, then yes, the internet is dangerous. But if you talk to you friends who you trust and even have a program to keep the viruses away then the internet is safe! Just be careful what you are doing and make sure you do not have any viruses on your computer before you do any online banking. I would rather go to the bank and do my banking there than risking my money and identity online. Thats my opinion.

Internet is not a very secure of safe but while you using internet such as internet banking you can use prevention steps to avoid the hackers or phishing sites for example you must don't trust a link was send to you through email and don't key in anything through the link provided.

Never fully safe. You can minimize the risk but there is always a risk. Whatever you do, at the most, you just make it harder or not worthwhile the trouble.

Not really. Banks and other sites where sensitive data needs to be provided are trying their best to introduce newer security features which itself shows how unsafe they themselves think it is. I dont use net banking and I don't have that much money to worry the robbers either but smoetimes think that if I had a lot of money in my bank, would I really use net banking. Internet does not seem to be such a safe place. Everyday we hear that someone hacked systems of such high security places like security agencies, then what is the security of common passwords and common sites.

Put it this was I don't get any nightmares worrying about it. My security is up to date and that's all I care about, and leave the worrying to other people. My computer has never been invaded in 14 years because I don't do stupid things on the Internet. I've got more chance getting flattened by a bus or hit by a chunk of ice falling off of an 747 or an Airbus 380!
