Interferring with nature when we let another animal care fo a rejected baby?

I was reading a small blurb on yahoo news about a mother cat adopting a rejected baby red panda. http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080709/od_uk_nm/oukoe_uk_dutch_redpanda;_ylt=AmLTpsFdzGJsYssPqCO931jtiBIF It got me thinking about nature and how mothers in the wild will reject an infant that wont survive or isn't healthy. I got wondering if we are interfering with nature and natural selection when we "help" a baby survive like that by taking it to a mother that lost her own baby or even a mother of a another species that has a baby already to see if they will accept it. I also got wondering if we interfere with natural selection in the human race and that if by saving everyone...are we causing the human race to be a sickly species? Any thoughts?

Good question! Although I think natural selection and interferring by taking in abdoned animals is different... Yes fair enough taking in a loned animal kinda is messing with good ol' mother nature a bit, due to the fact it was NATURAL instinct that the mother left her child.. But it's also NATURAL in human nature (i'd like to say all but can't) to help defensless creatures and live forms... Whichever you thing, science or compassion (sounds a bit judgemental to me though, more to it i reckon)... As far as natural selection goes, that's just the human race once again rearing it's ugly head in places where it doesn't belong, it's tampering with nature, not just interferring.. You can help an animal from dieing if you feel the need to help it. You gentically change a person, you're not helping, you're perfecting..

You're right it does sound a bit judgmental. I'm honestly not sure what I think about all this. I like hearing what other people think on the subject...learning more and trying to develop an opinion.

I can see where this could become a really touchy subject, but I do agree with your thoughts. Just because we can do something, doesn't always make it the wise choice. Of course, no one wants someone they love to die no matter what the circumstances and it's natural to try to save them. I think sometimes our scientific abilities far outweigh our common sense.

I can see too how it can be touchy. I'm hoping not to hurt or upset anything by saying what i said or say. I do think however there are times when technology pushes saving people or keeping people alive just a little too far or beyond common sense as you said.
