Do you hire somebody to care for your old folks, or do it yourself?

Well, here in the Philippines, most old people were taken care of their own families. Their children will take turns of caring them personally. If they have work and too busy to do it, they will pay somebody but still they monitor the care taker every now and then. They let the old folks stay with them in their own home so that they can follow up their health conditions. This is the thing that most old people who migrated to other countries long for. The personal care of their own family. I heard some immigrants said, they don't like to grow old in other countries.
Well, I just want to ask you, why is it like this in other countries? why most children do not take care of their old parents at home?
Is it beacause they have enough money to pay the nursings home? or is it because the old have retirement benefits and they must use of it by staying in the nursing home? I am just curious because we don't have nursing homes in our country.
Thanks for sharing your opinons about this.

1.) The person is estranged from their family.
2.) The old persons health/mind has deterated to the point of needing to be constantly monitored.
3.) There is no family nearby.
4.) Not being able to afford it.
5.) Not having the extra room for an ailing family member.
6.) People wanting to have their own lives.
7.) Not having the time to care for somone.
It could be any number of these reasons.

Oh really? thanks for the information. I just don;t want to have negative thinking about this issue of why old people in other countries specially in US are in the nursing homes. Then I had it in mind that is why they are hiring nurses and care givers for this reason? Well, just curious.
Thanks for the reply.
