I am looking for opinions and advice about giving cats milk..I have alway given my cats milk but a friend told me not to, that it is not good for them. I have never heard of such a thing so still give my cats milk. My male bugs me every morning until I give him some. What do yo think?

Many cats are lactose-intolerant. That is why they say you shouldn't give milk to cats. I have cats. I do not give them milk. I don't feed them table food They will not drink it if I did give it to them. So I think it is an acquired taste for cats. One of them will only eat dry cat food. One thing one would notice if they looked is that no animals drink milk beyond infancy other than humans. Therefore I see no need that it would be necessary. As long as your cat is not purging the milk and does not have diarrhea it should be ok to give it milk.

Thank you for you info. The male does have looser stools but he had them even befor I started to give them the milk. I had them for a couple of months before giving them a little in the morning for a treat.

Life is short. Eating is one of the legal pleasures. The cat's life is even shorter. Let him have milk. Thank you for the best response.

Some cats are lactose intolerant, just like people can be. If your cat doesn't get diarrhea from milk, you don't have to worry. One of our cats loves anything dairy. She eats ice cream, cheese and sour cream. She's fine with it and insists, like your cat, to share in these foods.

Thank you. someone had just told me that also. I have to say I had never heard of cats being lactose intolerant, but I guess if people can be so can cats. I havent tried them on ice cream but they do like a little bit of cheese now and them as a treat. Not very often on that though. Thanks again

a good portion of cats are lactose intolerant-they get diarrhea. but not all,i've had cats myself that could have bowl after bowl with no reaction. milk made for people with lactose intolerance is a good substitution,if the cat shows any effects from milk drinking.

Kittens tolerate milk, while grown cats do not. Why? Because cats become "lactose intolerant" as they grow up. You can give them "lactose FREE" milk if you'd like, that's FINE! Or maybe a small amount of "regular" milk, but it is the lactose that they cannot handle in their digestion. Another thing... when milk is AGED... that is, when they make milk into AGED CHEESES (such as AGED Cheddar... but not mozzarella, it's not aged), the AGING process "changes" the lactose and gets rid of the problem. Therefore, AGED CHEESE is just FINE to give cats. Mine go GAH-GAH over CHEDDAR cheese, they can't get ENOUGH of it! Give it a try, and you will be surprised at just how much they LOVE it!

Thank you very much for your info. I have had cats all my life, up to five at a time and still seem to know so little. I definately will try some aged cheddar with them as they do like cheese. Right now they are both under a year old so ok wth the milk so far.

I've heard that too. I believe someone told me it gives them diarrhea or some like that. I have always given any animal i have had including my cats milk. None of them ever seem to have a prob & they all loved it too.
