I listen to all kinds of music from pop, rock, classical, trance celtic.... and the list goes on although I know very little about music, musical notes and harmonics. I myself drawn to music which have some notes that noticeably have enduced certain emotions. Do you feel the same or find that music in general does that to you ?

Music touches our soul in all times, in happiness and in sadness. Even though our affinity towards different genres of music is different but we are emotional to it no matter what. Me personally, love blues, country music and may be softer tunes. I like instruments a lot. Different instruments bring different emotions to me. Violin, Saxophone are so beautiful and full of pathos while piano, harmonica are so vibrant!! Thanks.

I get lost in time when the music touches me in the way you describe it. And the way you describe it:- Too good! Mimpi, There is something else which I was trying to also figure out in this discussion, and I don't think I have conveyed it well. I was reading about it yesterday and it has got to do with the way certain harmonics or tones tend to vibrate within us thereby creating these emotions. For ex. there has been some research done on the sacred word we all know, "Om" and how this vibrates within us and enduces a certain emotion. Will try to also dig out more about this through the net.

Alok Now I know what you mean. Yes, certain words , like you have mentioned and also the vedic hyms, chantings, mantras, meditation music make soothe us instantly and elevate us to a different platform altogether. Even the bhajans, devotional music have impacts that cannot be denied. On the other hand certain music excites us sensually and some brings in a happy feeling, just as some makes us sad without any apparent reason! Thanks. PS: This is such an insightful discussion! I wish more aspects of music unfolds through other responses.

Hi there! In my opinion the type of music we listen to does reflects our emotions. Like at times when we feel kinda sad we tend to listen to slow music or love songs. And when we feel hyper or alive we tend to listen to rock and disco type musics. As if we want music to be one with our emotions. But sometimes its the opposite. Listening to music changes our moods. For example when we're bored and we hear happy songs or pop music it makes our spirit alive and we forget being bored and lonely. I am a piano player and in playing the piano the tunes and the speed reflects emotions. Its like there is story in a piece that I play. When its slow, it means sad and when its fast sometimes its an expression of being angry and hard. And when its on a regular phase its denotes happiness.

What you say makes a lot sense and thanks for the response. However since you are a piano player let me ask this question of you. While playing the piano are there certain notes or keys that kind of give you a strange feeling ?

Well lower notes do sometimes give me creepy feelings hehe. But I don't usually interpret the notes that way. Like note by note. You see I interpret the notes when they're together or when I'm playing it as a whole.
