It is said that Paul started christianity, isn't it strange for a man who never met Jesus to do so?.

I don't think it's strange at all. Jesus was never a Christian he was a Jew. Christianity grew out of Judaism. It concentrated on the teachings of Jesus who is said to be the Christ. So, it makes sense to me. Jesus wasn't tooting his own horn so to speak. He was trying to take the teachings of Judaism to the next level.

Paul is not a gospel writer but he is the writer of all epistles. Yes he actually met Christ on is way to Damascus. While on his way to Damascus, the Lord Jesus apeared to Paul in a form of a very brilliant light saying "Saul, Saul why are you persecuting me ?" Apostle Paul before his conversion persecuted he christians. This meeting with Christ at Damascus led to his conversion. For further reference read the Book of Acts chapter 9 of the Holy Bible.

On second thought, Paul met a talking bright light. If he got the opportunity to physically meet Jesus without anyone identifying Jesus to him, do you think he could have recognized Him?.

Venturing into the theoretical here. Maybe anyone would recognise Jesus simply because of his glory. Many Jews recognised him as the messiah through his actions, and many demons he cast out also recognised him even though they had never seen him.
