If you are serious about writing, try freelancing for a newspaper. The pay isn't great, but it will build your clips; plus, it will give you a somewhat steady source of income. Try checking with your local newspaper(s) and online at Journalism Jobs. Associated Content is good site; if you give them exclusive rights, you can get paid upfront (at a decent rate). I won't, so I don't; I prefer holding onto my publishing rights when possible.

Associated Content is good. If you are dedicated you could probably do pretty well. There offer a variety of ways to earn from almost any type of writing you do. helium is ok too but I have had the most fun and success on associated content.
