What would happen if we stuck all the criminals on an island by themselves?

Maybe like an island for criminals, no bars. Just sand and surf, huts and thousands of miles of ocean to hold in prisoners. Do you think that would work? It wouldn't be a vacation. Just a way to separate prisoners from the general population. Maybe prisoners would have to maintain their own gardens and chicken coops to have food to live? What do you think? Would it work? Can you add any more ideas?

Like Devils Island, the prison island in French Guiana, off the north coast of South America. The movie with Humphrey Bogart showed it. I think itwas called "We're No Angels"

That's not a bad idea. It would get them away from us, but they woudln't be "locked up or killed" either. They'd be "free to live" just not in any place where they could take their anger out on anyone else bu other criminals. They would be orced to maintain the place themselves with no asistance from the outside world Not a bad idea at all!!!! Maybe put some electric eels in the water or barbed wire, so they couldn't escape and re-offend in society.

That's what I was thinking. It would be much more humane to allow prisoners to live elsewhere, just not among us. How humane is it to keep men and women in small cages for most of the day, right? I would think a prisoner colony could even have regular houses or dormitory style houses. Maybe like small cities. But the prisoners would be in charge of keeping the place going. It would require them to give back to their own society if they wanted to live in comfort.

That is what the British and the French tried in the 1800's. That is how Australia was first settled along with colonies in the Central and Southern Americas. It did not work very well then and probably would not work today. It is a good idea to get them out of our society and put them in a place where they only have each other to deal with.

I have heard that! That is a really really large place. Was thinking of something slightly smaller.

may be then there will be a scope for improvement in their criminal thinking and they will be less thinking of criminal activities rather than thinking their lifetime beautiful and a life which others can remember or set an examples by themselves and also no one chooses to be a criminal instead the conditions make hin criminal and then the things keep on gettting worse for them

Well it actually has happened before =P Australia was first used for a place to dump criminals from Europe, and now Australia has one of the lowest criminal rate in the world. See the irony in this? haha

Wonder why they'd stick them in Australia? I was speaking more about an actual island like in Castaway.

That sounds really intersting. I wonder how long they would last this way. It does sound like a neat idea though that way they would have to learn how to grow thier own food to eat and hunt wildlife and go fishing for fish.

Being self sustaining has reformed many people! I don't know how feasible the idea would be overall but I am sure that some government (other than the US/Canada combo) would be happy with it. I'm not a cruel person at heart, but when the gov cuts spending on pregnant moms and health care for poor but happily finances prisoners getting cable TV and 24/7 health care from a real doctor, then I do have issues! It's all hypothetical anyway. I was really surprised at how offended some people got at me over a mere supposition! Thanks for your post! Beauty Queen

It is a phenominal idea. As others have pointed out, it has worked before. I think the problem would be finding an unpopulated island that would be big enough to hold them all. Someone would make a reality show out it. "Survivor. Criminal Island"

That was such a nice idea! I think it will be nice for the criminals too cause they will not be felt outcast anymore cause they will be able to live freely in that island together with co-criminals.

That was my thoughts also. Not just separating them from general society but creating a small society of their own where they could coexist with each other and depend on themselves. In modern day society some people become criminals cause they never fit in and they don't know how to survive the modern jungle! Who knows?

A la 'Lost'? LOL! Actually as long as they were monitored by the coast guard or something once in awhile to make sure nobody was banding together to build a raft to get off. I would say they be given certain supplies and sustainable resources (gardens and supplies to plant/harvest, animals for food sources, eggs, milk, etc, supplies needed for fishing or trapping) and periodic other drops of supplies. As far as prisoners are concerned, the main reason they are prisoners in the first place are that they are a danger to the general public. If they were stuck on an island, that would no longer be the case, so it sounds like a perfect solution. I also think it would be cheaper for taxpayers, other than taxpayer money going towards basic supplies that were dropped every so often, we would not have to pay for the jails, which include of course room and board, heat, electricity, extras they should not have like tv, a gym, COLLEGE courses or training, 3 meals a day, etc. Homeless people who are not criminals don't even get that!

That is the truth! We have so many homeless people and yet the government does less than nothing to take care of them. But they spare no expense to coddle the prisoners. Even good dental care that they don't have to pay for. It's like saying, "We're sorry we have to punish you!" No wonder the criminals never reform. Politicians are so happy to cut social programs which help indigent pregnant moms and their babies, but balk at the idea of leaving prisoners with less than finery. It's really sad.

First off this island would need to be surrounded by huge 100 ft walls with barbed wire, because they'd still find a way to escape, and probably survive and make it to mainland. But I think all in all, they'd all end up killing each other until there were only a few left. This is why prisons keep them seperated, and watched by guards when they're not seperated. Some of these guys are murderers who don't deserve to live, but others are simply people who've made a mistake, and after their time served they will be allowed back into society. On this island, the scum of the earth would end up murdering the few that deserve to return to society.

Why would they want to escape? They would not be persecuted. They hate our society so much, they would not want to rejoin.

Hummmmm, that just may not be a bad idea. Give them some items to grow a garden, furnish their clothes and let them have a little community.

Self sustaining! Yes. They would have to depend on their own efforts to survive, not just handouts from the government in a prison.

That'd be interesting to try. I think a lot of them would gang up on eachother and murder other castaways. At least they'd be away from the rest of the world.

never would work.the strongest would eliminate the weaker, then they'd be tearing that place apart to make boats to get off.they'd have to at the very least patrol it.

Do you know that Australia is such a nation? It worked out pretty well. Prisoners are still humans and I think Prisoners tend to be more adventurous. They dare to do thing normal people do not dare to do (sadly speaking, those things made them end up in jail). If they can put their adventurous thinking into positive actions, they can actually build a beautiful life out of the remote island.

Now that would be justice! They would learn to work together and become a decent community or kill each other off. (Sink or swim!)

Well I am not sure what would happen if we stuck prisoners on an island by themselves but I think that it would be a very good way to repent to society. I would honestly make them stay there and live amongst the criminals even if they did repent and became a better person. I know that sounds cruel so I suppose I Would not make them stay there for long if they were a better person, but I would definitely think twice before allowing them back in society. I suppose that maybe there should be another section of that same island for those who have repented and are a better person. Would ladies as well as gentlemen be allowed on this same island? I hope that you Have a Wonderfully Lovely Day!

You'd probably have the most energetic and violent survival show in the world - but yeah, they would have to fend for themselves, its definately an idea thats worth looking into...
