Fleas....

My new puppy has fleas. I was told that they treated him for fleas before I purchased him from the pound, 3 days ago. I already bathed him twice in a flea-tick shampoo, but he is still scratching and I still see an occassional flea. What should I do? What's the best treatment for this?

What an adorable puppy! Congratulations on getting him and welcome to Mylot.
Frontline does work, just make sure you get a dosage that is safe for puppies. You will need to treat your home and his bedding too, to make sure you kill them all (you can use a bug bomb or spray, and wash all his bedding in hot water).

Yes, I'm always amazed at how quickly fleas can and do reproduce, every time I have had pets with fleas. Once you get rid of them and use something preventative like a monthly dose of frontline, though, it gets much easier.

Since he has been treated twice, you may want to make sure his skin isn't irritated from the treatments. If the Advantage doesn't work (you can't use it on pets under a certian age - I think 6 months) then try apple cider vinegar. You can make a 50/50 solution mixing it with water and wipe him down with it every day. Also make sure to treat your home. I know you have had him only a little while but it doesn't take long for those boogers to find their way into your carpeting.

Hi there glgcpa - yes get the frontline plus from your local vets. When i got my kitten the woman said he was flea treated but i think they mean that they have done their mother and it should do them as well, but it doesn't. So yes bath him, get as many of the fleas off him while hes wet and in the bath and then use the frontline plus on him.

Thank you! I actually have rarely seen the fleas on him. I've never seen them while I was bathing him. I saw him itching all the time and thought it was probably fleas, which is why I gave him his first flea bath. Then about a day later, I saw one flea on him, and gave him another bath. He hasn't been itching hardly at all anymore, but I have my suspicions that they aren't all gone.

Oooooooh! He's soooooooooo cuuuuuuuute! Do they make flea-collars in his size? I'm not sure what to tell you, but keep up with the baths, as they seem to be helping some. But look into a flea-collar, if I were you.

Flea collars really don't work. The Front-line plus and treating your house is the way to go. Plus, the itching can be helped by applying a soothing spray that you can get at the petstore. It's probably best to not use anymore flea shampoo because he is a little puppy and that's a lot of pesticide. Plus, frequent bathing can dry his skin and cause more itching.

Yes, I was worried about overdoing it with the bathing. He seemed very afraid the firt time I bathed him. The second time, he really didn't want to be bathed at first, but then for some reason, he calmed down and seemed to enjoy it. I agree that I could be irritating his skin with that though. Thanks for posting.
