How to prevent spam or ads mail in gmail?

I creat a email address in gmail and use it till now. But there are some ads service alway send mails to me day by day .I'm tired of them ,But I don't know how to preventing these mails .I heard that we can prevent them by set a filter ,But I really don't know how .So could u tell me how to preventing spam or ads mails in gmail?
