Mrs Merv Grazinski, of Oklahoma City, bought a new 10m Winnebago motor home and on her first trip home set the cruise control at 70 on the freeway. She then calmly left the driver’s seat to go and make herself a sandwich. Not surprisingly, the Winnebago left the freeway, crashed and overturned. Mrs Grazinsky sued Winnebago for not advising her in the owner’s manual that she couldn’t do this. The jury awarded her $2.3 million Winnebago changed their owner's manual in case there are more idiots like her out there in the world. Personally, I already know there are - starting with the people who awarded her all of this money for being stupid. My son says - Stupidity should be painful. I would like to add to this Stupidity should be painful, not rewarded

This is the most outrageous thing I haver heard on a long time. Winnebago has to pay for this woman being a total idiot. This would be like setting the cruise control in your car and then laying down to take a nap. I hope Winnebago fights this ridiculous award with everything they have. The woman has to be a first class idiot. Wonder if she will try to sue me for saying that. All I have to say is go at it lady - I'm broke.

I did a check on this and there are places that say it is true... http://forums.chargers.com/archive/index.php/t-15515.html http://www.2spare.com/item_65657.aspx http://www.automotivehelper.com/topic107944.htm http://www.gunandgame.com/forums/humor-forum/6679-stupid-lawsuit-awards.html So you can see why I thought this was true. Thanks for pointing it out to me!

I like (maybe "like" isn't the right word for stories that make you think "WTH??") the Stella Awards and their companion site www.thisistrue.com ,which reports wacky news items in print..I knew I'd seen that Winnebago story before somewhere, and had to check! It makes for a great story, though!

I was going to mention the fact that this story began circulating shortly after cruise controls were adopted... It's had a long life. It's nice to see that there ARE still a FEW people who do look things up and do not believe everything they read. (Or do we?)

I have heard of things like this before but never heard of anyone trying to sue for it but it don't surprise me. As for awarding her money for this she should have been laughed out of the court house. No wait, that is pretty stupid too, this should have never even gotten as far as wasting the courts time or all the people in the jury.

I would be embarrassed to tell people what I did. My ex- used to work for a lawyer who got his fingers crushed between the panels of a garage door when closing it. He sued the manufacturer and installer for not putting warnings on the garage door and he won. I wish I could be that stupid and get rich.

Now why didn't I think of doing that years ago when I got my thumb caught in the truck door and had to go to the doctor twice to get it drained and finally lost the nail .... I should have sued Ford for not having a warning about keeping my fingers away from the door when closing the door. hahahahaha Dang, I could have gotten rich. It is sad what people do or try to do to sue and get money.

That's amazing. But I think the jury who awarded her money was even more dumb than she was. Who would think that they could put a vehicle on cruise control and go and make a sandwich? That's insane.

Sorry, but we live in a stupid world. That is why we have all the warnings on things. I read them and shake my head and say why..but obviously, someone needs them.

That is insane. On the other hand, stories like that almost make me wonder what stupid thing I can do, and then sue over. LOL I think that is why it keeps happenning...people keep getting away with it. Stupidity should not be rewarded. This is why we now have to have 3 lines of warnings on a coffee cup. Geesh!

So, instead of cruise control she thought it was an autopilot? Amazing. Kind of reminds me of when I got my first computer in the 80's and it had a word processor. I demonstrated it for a relative who was particularily interested in the word processor, until she saw you still had to type the words. She thought if a 'word processor' did not do the typing for you, it was not worth having.

Oh geez!!!!!! No wonder people don't like me. I'm too logical. I knew about the cruise control without reading the manual. I can't believe the things that people are suing for, thee days.

I think part of the problem is the huge amount of money the lawyers get. What if the were a cap on what the lawyers could get? Do you think the number of lawsuits would drop.

I think there are at least 3 idiots in this scenario. First is the manual writer, second Mrs Grazinski, third the judge who rewarded her the money.

Well I can't blame the manual writer they just do as they are told. But the judge, he has virtually guaranteed that every idiot will now try and sue.

There will always be idiots in the world. I'm surprised she wasn't killed. On top of that, idiots seem really eager to sue when they get hurt. And on TOP of that, our juries must be full of idiots as well, because they seem to side with their fellow idiots and make sure the courts award them tons of money!

Ahh, another person getting rewarded for her stupidity. This will continue to happen until companies realize that common sense isn't common, because everyone doesn't have it. This suit is no different than the McDonald's lawsuit from that woman that burned her lap with the coffee because she was holding it between her legs while driving. The only reason she won was that McDonalds didn't have the "Caution: Contents Hot!" warning that all restaurants do now. Companies must start having a board of these same dummies to go over products and manuals, to make sure that nothing obvious is left out, that is the only way that these companies will be able to protect themselves.

The manual was the cause of a lady getting 2.3 million dollars. That is really something. I would think that most people would know that when your driving a vehicle of any kind that someone has to be behind the wheel. This seem like that lady didn't understand that just cause it was on cruise control did mean that she could leave the drivers seat. What made her think that I don't know but she must have really thought that she could leave the seat. Crash, and then go to court and they take what she said into consideration. Now do you think that if it was a young person driving that they would have thought that way too?

Maybe they should call it speed control. Since cruise control could maybe imply the whole process was controlled.

It's funny that you mention this because I almost got hit by a car this morning. A lady completely not paying attention to the road in front of her almost hit me in the middle of a cross walk. She wasn't going fast just not paying attention and never slowed down. I moved out of the way so I was safe, but it was still a little shocking. I heard a saying about take the warning labels off of things and let the problem sort itself out for dealing with stupid people. Sometimes it doesn't seem like such a bad idea.

hi debs place wow what a piece of work? she must not have all of her marbles. cruise control does not mean you desert the drivers seat for a long time, what on earth does she use for brains, post toasties? And the jury what on earth was their excuse? they awarded her dumbness and stupidity 2.3 million that is so absurd its just unbelievable. Did all the jury think cruise control was like a magic wand and you no longer had to drive the vehicle? I dont understand why she was awarded anything. anyone with a bit of common sense would have known better than that.

This was one that I just HAD to look up. It is just too stupid! I know that there are plenty of really stupid people in the world, but it hurts me to think that people like this could be on the road! Anyway, what I found is here: http://www.snopes.com/autos/techno/cruise.asp I've made a habit out of looking these incredulous things up on Snopes. Sometimes, I get so angry or upset over nothing more than a hoax. The one about the old woman being awarded millions for burning herself on her lap with hot coffee is true, however. I agree... stupidity should be painful, not rewarded!

I too did a search on it, and many sites are listing this as true. So I thought it was true. But as I mentioned above, my ex- worked for a lawyer who crushed his fingers when closing a panel garage door, he sued the company for not warning him about it and got over a mill.

I'd love to know where these lawyers hide out! My kids were both hurt in a freak accident in a department store once and got only $2,500.00 each! They could have been blinded! I was in the store buying paint and my kids were about 6 and 4 years old. There was a display of "Whirly-gigs" nearby... a box of them on the floor with most of them upside down so the metal rod was sticking up. One was on the floor and, when my back was turned, my oldest son started screaming. I looked over and saw him bleeding near his eye. I took him into the restroom while my husband waited outside with my youngest son. I cleaned my oldest son up and saw that he had torn his eyelid, right in the crease. It kept bleeding. He told me he had bent down to pick up the whirlygig on the floor and the rod from one in the box poked him in the eye. When we got out of the restroom, my husband was rushing my other son towards me. He was screaming and holding HIS eye! He had done the exact same thing only a few minutes after my older son, only my youngest had torn his eyelid right at the eyelashes!!! The manager at the store tried to get me to sign a release form (yeah right!) and I took them right to the ER. They both got stitches, and have permanent scars. (Have you ever tried to hold a 4- or 6-year-old down while they got stitches in their eyelids? Not fun!!!) I went back to the store and took a picture of the display of whirlygigs, still on the floor, still upside down in the box with the metal rods sticking up! Yet, they were only awarded $2,500.00 each! Unbelieveable!
