The New Yorker Cover - Will they Get the Satire?

There has been a lot of talk and spin today about this week's issue of The New Yorker Magazine's controversial cover featuring Barack and Michelle Obama in the Oval Office, doing a fist-bump, he wearing a turban and she in fatigues and holding an AK47. There's a U.S. Flag burning in the fireplace and a portrait of Osama Bin Laden hanging on the wall. The editor of The New Yorker says it was obviously intended to be satire, and to make fun of the outrageous rumors and viral e-mail campaigns going around about the Obama's but I really fear there are too many people who will take this picture, obvious caricature or not, at face value! http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080714/ap_on_el_pr/obama_new_yorker "The New Yorker may think, as one of their staff explained to us, that their cover is a satirical lampoon of the caricature Senator Obama's right-wing critics have tried to create," said Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton. "But most readers will see it as tasteless and offensive. And we agree." n a statement Monday, the magazine said the cover "combines a number of fantastical images about the Obamas and shows them for the obvious distortions they are." "The burning flag, the nationalist-radical and Islamic outfits, the fist-bump, the portrait on the wall? All of them echo one attack or another. Satire is part of what we do, and it is meant to bring things out into the open, to hold up a mirror to prejudice, the hateful, and the absurd. And that's the spirit of this cover," the New Yorker statement said. The statement also pointed to the two articles on Obama contained inside the magazine, calling them "very serious." (End of excerpt) I really fear many people who are not regular readers of The New Yorker may see this cover and say, "SEE!! I told you he's a radical Muslim and she's an anti-white militant!" The latest Newsweek poll shows that 12% of those surveyed believe Obama is a Muslim and even more believe he went to a Muslim school as a child in Indonesia - which is NOT true, by the way, he went to a government run state school in Indonesia which was not affiliated with any religion. I know there are a lot of anti-Obama members here but I'd really like to keep this discussion on-topic instead of turning into a contest about who can post the latest, most far-out e-mail allegation. Please, when you respond try to simply answer a few simple questions and obviously feel free to give your honest opinions on the topic itself. 1/ Do you think the "average" American will "get" the satire or will they look at the cover and take it as an attack on Obama? Please keep in mind that there are many people who aren't all that familiar, if at all, with this magazine and for them tis many be their first real exposure to it. 2/ IF you were part of the Obama campaign or a supporter of him, how would you feel about this cover? Would you be offended, angry, amused or more or less indifferent, believing it won't really affect many voters one way or another and this media attention will be over, possibly as soon as tomorrow? 3/ IF you were a McCain supporter or just someone who is against Obama, how would YOU feel about this cover? Would it make you happy and would you think it may take some votes away from him? 4/ This really only matters to the publishers of The New Yorker, and it's no doubt the reason for this cover to begin with, no matter what their political beliefs are; do you think it will sell more magazines than usual and increase their circulation, at least for this week? 1. I think most will see it as an attack on Obama. Just because something is satire, that doesn't mean it can't double as an attack. 2. If I were a supporter, I'd be pissed off and be posting on places like Mylot about how disgusting it is that the published this. 3. As a McCain supporter, I think this was an extremely stupid move by the New Yorker. I believe they will lose a large number of subscribers as a result, and remember, New York is a state largely populated by democrats. I don't think Obama will lose any noticeable amount of votes as a result. 4. I think they will lose more subscribers than they will gain by this. It is a publicity stunt and it will get them a lot of attention as it already has. Many believe that any publicity is good publicity, so they've already gotten what they wanted in the short term.

You're right, this is the most attention I've seen The New Yorker get in the mainstream media for awhile, if ever. They probably will sell a few extra newsstand copies this week but I don't think it will help them in the long term and as you said there probably will be some cancellations by disgruntled readers. 1/ Yes, I do think the average American would see this as an attack on Obama, but the fact that people could believe that about any American pretty much says that Americans are not ready for him. 2/ Yes, if I were an Obama supporter and campaigner I would be extremely offended by this, but the fact I'm not, so I'll continue in the next question. 3/Ths question I can anwer best, as I am a McCain Supporer, and yes this does make me laugh, it made me happy, of course then it made me afraid because I know that with a fool like him running for office (more than likely going to get into office because he's black) this is a defnite possibility. No, I do not believe this will take away any votes from him, just make the idiots supporting him angry. 4/Yes, I do believe the magazine will sell more copies this week. I've dug myself a deep enough hole.

First, welcome to myLot, I hope you enjoy yourself here, I really do. However, if you really meant to call anyone who is supporting Obama an "idiot", I hope you think twice before making posts like this in the future. I have to ask you another question, based on your response. You said, "...then it made me afraid because I know that with a fool like him running for office (more than likely going to get into office because he's black) this is a defnite possibility." WHAT is a definite possibility? The nonsense depicted in that cover picture coming true? You apparently don't get the satire at all, which is what I was afraid of. Annie

I'm sorry if I came off a bit harsh but I honestly didn't want you to get off on the wrong foot here. I understand how sometimes things don't come out exactly as you meant them to and the difference between writing in forum my myLot and speaking to someone face to face is the reader doesn't have the benefit of hearing your tone of voice or the inflections or seeing your facials expressions. I know, if I"m talking to a friend and say something like, "What, are you an idiot?" in person he or she would know I was joking or being sarcastic in a hopefully "witty" way but when it's in writing...well, you know what I mean. I can't disagree with you about people who vote for a candidate for all the wrong reasons rather than based on the issues. I might not call them idiots but they are "uninformed"...lol Thanks for your clarification and once again, welcome to myLot and happy posting. Annie

Yeah, sorry, I got a bit carried away. Allow me to clarify, I don't think all Obama suppoters are idiots, in fact some of my best friends are Obama supporers, an I'm sure if I said something like that in front of them they wouldn't be my friends anymore. What I suppose really meant was anyone that is supportng Obama, because he's black, or young, or just a change of pace, they are idiots, and that happens to be a large percentage of his supporters. I swear I'm not being sarcastic. I stand by everything else I said however.

I saw the picture of the New Yorker on the local paper this morning, but I think most Austrians would not get the satire, but take it at face value.

same here, I don't think that people in other countries will get the satire, especially the ones that do not follow American presidential campaign closely. To publish this kind of cartoon is a very insensitive thing to do...

1.I'm sure many will understand the satire...I'm not so sure it will matter though. This is like those jokes that are meant to be funny but miss the mark and go straight to offensive. 2. I think he and his campaign members will just look at this as yet another...whatever you want to call all the other false "reports" about him. He knows his supporters know the truth, his detractors don't care, and everyone in between will be swayed one way or another anyway. 3. I doubt McCain's side will put much stock into it either. For all they know, next week or next month the cover will be a "satire" about him. 4. I think the sales will be up slightly for the week but probably not drastically and will level out shortly. Some new readers will buy it now and in the future.but some Obama supporters who usually buy it may skip this week's and possibly future editions

I agree, Foxy, I knew right away it was meant to be satire and I think in particular anyone who is familiar with this magazine would know that right away since it is a fairly liberal magazine. You nailed it, it was meant to be funny but sure did miss the mark and went straight to offensive! I don't know what to call all these "reports" about Obama either, well nothing I can write here at least. Annie

Many people will see it and possibly vote against him. That has to be the reason why they did it. If I were part of the campaign or close to him I would tease him about it. I would do the same if it were a personal friend of mine about something similar. Kind of like if they were broke and bought a 40oz of Magnum. Just an example. I don't know anyone who would do it. LOL If I were a supporter of McCain I would think it was messed up but I would be glad because it would help McCain. Some people will vote for McCain because of it. I think it will increase sales. It is all over television. People will buy it. I bet they are for sale on eBay. I'll go check. There is an auction with bidding up to $15.50 as well as free shipping. People see dollar signs and go crazy.

Annie, I'm usually pretty good at spotting satire, but this time all I see is cruelty. I find that cover totally objectionable. If anyone isn't offended, I can't imagine why not. I'm tempted to subscribe to The New Yorker just so I can cancel my subscription!

I've heard there are a lot of people canceling their subscriptions. I have to sk my brother who lives in New Jersey if he's going to cancel his. I'm sure he won't like the cover but I'm not sure if he'll go so far as to cancel because he follows a lot of jazz musicians that perform in NYC so he might just decide to suck it up and just send them a nasty e-mail or letter to the editor. I'll keep you posted! The next poster doesn't exactly share our views! Annie

You might remind your brother there are several other publications that cover the jazz scene very nicely! the New Yorker must be made to give more attention to its content, no matter what the artist intended. That cover's a really lousy thing to do.

I don't get into political discussions because my views are just that - my views. However as for this "cartoon" - I find it VERY offensive. They can call it satire if they wish, but I think its rude and cruel. Even John McCain said he thought it was an offensive thing to put on their cover! I think they owe him and his wife a huge apology for this!

1) I think the average American will now know it was meant as satire because of the news coverage. Having said this I do think it provides fuel for the extreme-anti Obamanites. 2) I would be offended as a member of the Obama campaign. Satire has its' place but I think a line was crossed portraying the future president of the U.S. and his wife as terrorists. It is just not good for America. 3) If I were a McCain supporter this would not make me happy. The only people who will take this seriously are already not going to vote for Obama. If things like this are fair game on Obama it will onlybe a matter of time before McCain is insulted. 4)Yes it will sell more New Yorker magazines.
