Bandana's are not just used as a head covering anymore

I just read this in the latest version of the Dollar Stretcher and thought Duh!!! Now I know why my grandfather always had a bandana hanging out of his pocket when he was in his garden, and to think I thought he just used it to wipe the sweat of his brow. You can get them at AC moore or the Dollar Store for a dollar. I know I try to reuse my papertowels when I'm cooking in the kitchen and am constantly getting my hands wet or dirty with ingredients. I'm going to start doing this instead. A Girl Scout Trick Girl Scouts use bandanas when camping, and I've adapted the idea to use at home. As an at-home mom raising five kids with two still in diapers, I wash my hands often. To keep things sanitary (especially during times of sickness), I tend to use paper towels to dry my hands. Now, I use the bandana! Simply tuck the corner of the bandana into your pocket or waistband or hang it near the sink and use to quickly dry your hands. The thin bandana dries quickly and you might be surprised how many times you use it if you keep it tucked into your pocket or pants. I've drastically reduced the number of paper towels I use and the addition of laundering the bandanas has been marginal at best. And because my bandana is for my personal use, I'm not picking up or spreading any germs to my husband or kids. Give it a try! Michelle in DE

WOW! I never thought of that! lol I use to wear them in my hair, but have not seen that in years. lol I will have to try this, hubby will probably think I am nuts, but you are right about spreading the germs. I have all kinds of kitchen towels, and we use them all the time. Washing hands and drying them, etc. We both use the same towel and even though I wash them twice a week, we are actually spreading germs. Thanks for that eye opener Kimbers! ~Icy~

I just started wearing them in my hair, especially when I get out of the pool. I get so tired of wearing a baseball hat when I am having a bad hair day or should I say a lazy hair day. LOL I enjoy not having to do my hair in the summer, since I am off of work. I am going to pick up a couple more to keep for me in the kitchen.

I could never seem to figure out the right way to tie them on my head. I liked the idea of wearing them but could never get them to look the way other people wore them.

Hi, Kimbers. I have a few bandanas here at home and have not used either one yet. Several years ago, I used to wear a bandana while my ex-husband and I rode on the motorcycle. I would fold it down into the width that would cover my ears and then tie at the bottom of my head around my ponytail. Then I would top it off with my leather cap. I used the bandana to keep the wind out of my ears so that I wouldn't get earaches.

I think aprons, cloth hankies and everything similar should make a come back! I do like the bandana idea, it makes a lot of sense. One thing that really annoys me are these "clothlike" shop towels. They're a cross between heavy duty paper towels and shop rags but the point of them is to use them once and throw them away! I know a lot of stuff like grease and oil and gas shouldn't go in the washer and dryer but have people never heard of hosing things down and drying on a clothes line! Paper products really need to be limited.

i have a cool military bandana that came from fort hood. I guess I could use that. I've had the dog wear it for a decoration before. Right now it is lying on the kitchen floor. I guess i should try to find a better use for it. I dont use that many paper towels over the course of a day, only when I am cleaning up in the kitchen.

I use old hand towels or cut up old towels that are too worn to use for baths. You can also purchase what they call "bar towels" or "shop towels" at Walmart or at the Sam's Club. I like these because they are just plain terry cloth and can be bleached when they get stains on them.

We were just thinking of going to cloth towels instead of paper to save money. I never thought of using bandans for that. Plpus they are very cute and affordable. Thank you a ton.
