If I have a painful shoulder up to my neck, what should i do?

Due to heavy burden on my shoulder, i have a painful shoulder now and it affected up to my neck now. I experienced little pain when i turn my head to the left. Am thinking to go for a shoulder and neck massage. Would that help? I don't feel like going to see the doctor yet if there are better remedies than taking medication etc. Any suggestions?
