100 banks will be shut down this week, is this a start of another depression

I'm not really that worried, because no matter how i look at it I dont see how it will really effect me. But in 1928 what started the great deprission was the drop of a lender bank (just like the one that shut down friday) I dotn see anyone on here or anywhere really talking about it so maybe its no big deal. I did hear that if you use one of the banks that close you get all your money from them unless you have over 10,000 in it. then you only get .25 of every dollar. so what do you think about all of this, and is this the begining of another great deprission

I am a little nervous about all the banks closing, and although I had not started a discussion about it, it has definitely been on my mind alot lately.. not just the bank thing itself, but the thought of another depression... I mean it seems more and more inevitable each and every day... And I also think that it is horrible for people to lose some of their money when the banks closed.... I do not keep much in a bank account, the rising prices of gas and groceries makes sure of that these days, but it still makes me nervous to see our country headed down this path... I hope, for all of our sakes, that things take a turn for the better soon!

Yes me too, but at teh same time i think there are many people that need a good smack in the face so they realize that they need to quit spending beyond there means

I guess that is true, but our family does not spend above our needs... we have zero credit acrd debt and the only things that we have financed is a vehicle and it will be paid off in a couple of months... we are truly one of those families that is suffering right now.....we currently earn about 600 wkly for a family of three to live off of and it is not cutting it... groceries and gas are skyrocketing.. as mentioned before, I hope things turn around soon!.. we also don't qualify for gov't help with healthcare and our little boy has health problems so we pay out of pocket for that also.... yet minimum wage is too low to compensate for basic needs.. and we make above minimum wage in our household... I don't know how people are making it these days...

Your posts keep saying 10,000, that is wrong. You are insured up to 100,000. That is a very big difference. Many people have 10 grand, many fewer have 100 grand sitting in the bank. The FDIC insures that much money for each individual in the bank, they wouldn't be in business without this insurance.

I think the banking system of the country is really in deep trouble. Take a look at the reports from the stock market. Most banks are losing their money. The problems of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae did not really help boost the confident of the public on the country's financial and banking industry either. I wonder how bad these things can go from here... Yes, there is a possibility that some banks in the country will eventually closedown due to the financial slump and that in itself is really scary.

The worst thing anyone can do is continue a rumor. the internet is full of rumors. if you do the math, the end results will be devastating. the internet population is estimated at 1.4 billion people. Think about it. It's a rumor. Safeguard yourself and your family, be careful, but seriously. Rumors cause hysteria, hysteria causes panic, panic causes destruction. A rumor can destroy everything.

Do you have any links for this? I haven't heard anything about that many shutting down, just the stuff with that bank in California that the Feds took over. I was told today that over 10 grand is .50 cents on the dollar not .25. --- not like I'll ever have that much to think about anyhow LOL.

oh well the .25 cents to the dollar was what my fiance heard at work so i dont knwo about that one, i havent looked online yet, but im listening to the news in the background. hold on im going to search it and see if i can find something. there was one that i did say just saying that Bush is haveing a conferance about it today, he also heard the 100 bank thing from either work or the radio, so i probally should of searched first Heres one saying that another bank closed http://profilesblog.com/2008/05/first-integrity-bank/ I did hear the president say that there are more banks failing there was others talking about how this bank or that bank might shut down by years end. My fiance said that he thinks that the government is jsut trying to get money. It seems like they are all smaller banks, but you never know.

It is definitely a scary thing. I have been debating on pulling our money out of the bank (we have direct deposit) but my biggest fear with that is if we have a fire or natural disaster and lose the money it is gone - gone gone. Money doesn't resurrect itself when it is ashes or when a thief steals it from you. Our money is in a federal credit union but still. The whole thing is stressful. A woman I know lost 6 years worth of investment on her retirement money over the last year, actually the last two quarters, she is basically back to where she was when she started and with the economy the way it is now she might have less than she started with and there is no way to make it back.

yes it is scary, i never trusted banks, i would rather keep my money in my home, but my fiance is the finacial one and has his money in the bank, but i guess as long as we have less than 10 grand we are fine, i dont know though, i think he should at least take out the savings account and put it in a safe in our home. I guess the main thing we can do is sit back and wait, and try our best to make as much money inbetween this time

I dont know what it is the beginning of but all I see are grim times ahead, in a time where I was just getting our family finances on an even keel and starting to see some spare money I am now wondering how long before I am back in cack again. If there is a worry that banks are going to start shutting, my worry is that it will cause people to panic and start withdrawing money, which you cannot blame them for. But this will just cause things to worsen, my biggest fear is that I will end up losing my savings, not a lot granted, but my savings all the same. It is a nightmare.

First let me say that its quite refreshing to read or discuss something in the real world. (Granted most of the details are not correct) but thats the purpose of the discussion right? Well for the truth about 90 banks have been marked as "failing" and may be in more trouble than the rest. As for the amount that is insured by the FDIC, its all deposits up to 100k. If your deposits with the bank are up to that amount you will get your money. For everything after that amount its "up to 50%" which will take months or years to get back. However most people with funds over that are usually "money smart" and don't have all of their assets sitting in the bank and is/was aware of this coming. Their portfolio's are much more diverse than that. So these people are aware of the state of the economy and don't necessarily wait to see whats gonna be on the evening news. As for a depression I think it feels that way to the average lay person. But I don't think that the economy at its current state supports that. Its not being talked about on mylot because most of the people here are here for social topics mostly.

yes after posting this i read the article talking about 90 banks closing, and i wasnt so sure about the amount i knew it was either 100,000 or 10. The thing is i dont really see it hurting me and my family, we dont really have any debts, except the car which is almost paid off. We have plenty of money, and if it gets tighter in certain spots we can afford it, even if it is twice as bad as it is now, we wouldnt be getting a house and stuff as quick but we will be doing fine. I see the people that dont really work and that get money off of the government or what not being influenced by this more than anyone. I was really suprised when i didtn see anyone write about it on mylot, because we like to b!tch here. maybe i opened some peoples eyes

I think this is a potentially scary situation, but I like to think it won't end up like it did in the 20's. I don't think we're headed that way, but what do I know? I could be terribly wrong and we could be living out of suitcases and eating off rations. I'd like to think that our government has come a long way since then and have ways to prevent this from happening!

I do think that the life we live now has no room for another deprission, and that there are to many people out there that are smart enough to keep there bussiness's up and to keep there money flowing, i know that we could afford it if prices rise, we just wont have all the extras we get

I believe we are already in a recesssion and headed for a depression..All you have to do is look around you..Gas is up and going up daily..Groceries are sky high and going up as we speak...The salary is the same ,its not going up..By the time people go to work and back home the gas they spend takes a lot of that days salary...Plus businesses every where is being broken into, and thieft has always been around but it is worse than ever..People are actually stealing the copper from a/c units from churches to sell for the copper...People use to be afraid to steal from a church but not anymore, they are desperate. There has been several churches been robbed here just lately...Yes i do believe we are headed for a depression..The only thing that could help would be a big change fast, and then it would take a lot of time just to be even..The truck drivers are threatening to go on strick because they cannot afford the gas,its up to $5.00 a gallon. It takes $ 1,000 or more to fill one of those big rigs....

Things are much much different than they were in 1929. The economy is alot stronger and there are safeguards in place to protect against a total economic collapse. I'm not saying it's not going to be rough, but America in particular has become a wasteful, throwaway society and needs to learn a little belt tightening. From where do you think these problems with the banks come? From banks making risky, irresponsible loans to people who had no business taking them out. That's bad money management and a 1st year college student could tell you you don't borrow more than you can afford and you don't lend money to people who can't afford to pay it back, and yet that's exactly what these banks did.

in 1929 jobless rates were at 25%, today it's 5.5% In 1929 4,000 banks closed, today there are 90 on watch. I think people need to calm the hell down and get some perspective.

I think it is very depressing that you keep saying you wish a recession would happen.... that is AWFUL and you should be ashamed of yourself because MILLIONS of people will suffer if the economy gets any worse... and you seem so content with saying you will make it... but what if your fiance loses his job?... then you will be in the same boat with those millions of suffering people.... I think you need to get a grip... yes, some people are overspending... but to be able to overspend in the first place MAKES it your fault for not being able to handle your own money.... but for the rest of the people, such as people trying to scrape by on social security.. or the people making minimum wage, or just above... these people will suffer.. and even if it does not feel like a recession to YOU... THEY can tell... I think you all need to get your priorities straight.. there are other ways of straightening out the parts about the economy that you dont like besudes a depression... I hope you BITE YOUR TONGUE!:)

ALSO ... I just wanted to add that mortgage loans are not the only downfall we are having right now... what abotu the price of groceries?... What about the price of gas?... What about rental prices skyrocketing for those who did not take out a mortgage?... What about energy prices going up in general?.... like I said before... I hope you bite your tongue, because if these things go up anymore it will cause a devastation that most of your pampered behinds will never have to worry about.. and that is sad.. you have to remember that not everyone's situation is the same.... :)

What I heard on the news was that there were 90 more banks in trouble, but none had yet been taken over by the government. I also heard quite a few officials say that we must not have a run on our banks trying to get our money out. A run on the banks could cause some horrible problems with our economy. I also heard an economist just a few hours ago who said that there are always banks in trouble, we just don't hear about them. He said at any time in our country, there are always about 50-100 banks that they're watching.

well our dollar is dropping everyday, we are number one country in debt, and other countries are trying to get out of the dollar and into another system of money. WE use to be number one on our money, now were almost number one worst.

Whether we will have another depression or not, we must prepare ourselves so that we wil not end up in poverty. Need to lead a frugal life and cut down on unnecessary expenses. It will be hard on those who are already poor. We need to take action and not let the economy control our lives.

Hopefully another Great Depression can be avoided. The stock market is still up so theres hope. And I'm sure america has learned from its mistakes and disasters. There will be steps taken to avoid this, maybe this is a step being taken... I doubt it but just to be safe you should with draw most of your money from the bank and put it in your cellar or something. If another depression starts you gotta have some money.
