Having read so many books and experienced so many authors, I wish to know who do you think is the greatest author ever on this planet. I know there are many contenders but the most common author in a majority of the responses has to be the best author. There are many authors in the reckoning, but who's the ultimate one, giving us the perfect all-round reading enjoyment?

Well, I realise the purists would look at the style, literary value, etc., of an author - but to me, the greatest author would have to be one whose books I can't put down, have read dozens of times and still want to read again and again. That would be Monica Dickens. I have all her books, but my copies are so old and brittle the pages fall out when I open them - and sadly, they are all out of print now and can't be replaced. Every one of her books was an absolute gem - I laughed, cried and spent so many hours from my early teens onwards curled up with those books.

For me William Shakespeare has to be up there with the best of them for sure. His works have been read by billions of people throughout history in practically every translation imagineable. There are plays of his works being held every minute of every day somewere in the world and many of his works have even been made into Hollywood pictures as either direct or indirect interpretations. His writings will outlive all of us!

Each one will have favourites. To me , Charles Dickens is the greatest. He wrote excellent novels, very interesting stories. I also liked his writing style.

I don't know if i could pick just one ! I think it's subjective.Having a great number of people saying someone is the best dosen't really prove anything. If you want "popular" then looking at the best seller list will give you what you want.I enjoy fred saberhagen, frederic pohl, arthur c clarke and star wars and star trek novels by various authors. Are these the "best" there is no objective way to prove it.

I am not really a book fanatic, I barely read books. So I don't know if I am entitled in giving out my opinion here but what the heck I'll say it anyways.
I never read her book but I watched all the movies that was written by her. I am pertaining to J.K. Rowling the creator of Harry Potter. I don't know if she's the greatest of all time but I love watching Harry Potter.
If thats not qualified maybe I'll just settle with the creator of the most famous book of all time, The Bible. But I aint sure who the author is, so I chose J.K.Rowling instead.
