We are planning a golf outing soon for about 30+ church members. Any suggestions on how to run it, what type of prizes to give out, how to award prizes, etc.?

A couple of years ago, I put together a golf outing - We did a four man scramble, and charge 40 dollars. Half of the money paid for the event, the rest was prize money. We had a great time... The team in front of us kept moving the flag to the opposite side of the green, and we had a a bag of marshmallows and threw them everywhere. By the end of the outing, we weren't sure if we were chasing a ball or a marshmallow... hehehe... and we certainly didn't know where the cup was To this day we still laugh about it... We also had staked contests at each hole... best blindfolded putt etc,, and had small prizes.. It made it fun for "pro and non" golfers. Best score is something that good golfers can obtain, but non golfers love to achieve furthest backwards drive...

Sounds like a lot of fun. I have played in a lot of scrambles like that. I wll have to remember marshmallows, though. That is hilarious.

Since you posted this about 4 weeks ago, I assume you have already had the golf outing. I would like to know what kind of outing it was. We just finished a "Captain's Choice" outing at our church and it was loads of fun. What kind of tournament did you have, if any?

No we have not had it yet. We are planning it for late August. We will probably do some sort of scramle. But I was looking for something fun and new. What is a Captains Choice outing?

I was hoping you would ask that. In a captain's choice tournament you have four players for each team. Whoever your organizer is will divide them up into "A" player (the best player who is automatically the captain), the "B" player who is next best, the "C" player who is rather average, and the "D" player who is the struggling player. The match starts in any order of golfer the captain chooses. All four tee off. The best shot off the tee is the one the captain chooses and all team members take their next shot from that point and so it goes throughout the 18 holes. This gives every team member a chance to have their shot chosen as the best. I've seen some golfers who couldn't drive worth a flip but were a real whiz at putting. Even the best golfer has an off day on a few holes, but sometimes the less experienced golfers actually may have a good shot and of course their shot will be chosen by the captain. There's not much pressure in this type of match, just pure fun. Sometimes the longest shot may not be the best shot. We had a guy today who could drive the ball a mile but he ended up too close to a tree. The "C" player had a shorter drive but ended up in the fairway. His shot was chosen as the best so everyone hit from that point. Now the match is not any fun if you aren't playing against other teams doing the same thing. Some of those scores actually get down around professional levels. And that, in itself, is exciting. When putting, the same rules apply. But if someone puts a putt on the edge of the lip, you must be careful not to finish it until all have putted because the next person could put it in. In captain's choice you are allowed to improve your lie within a club-length of the chosen shot, but not forward of the shot. Try it. Believe me, you'll like it. Sometimes organizers will ask for a little more money than the normal green fee and cart fee. This money is used for prizes to make the tournament more interesting and exciting. You can make the tournament more interesting by having prizes for "Closest to Hole" on a 3 par, Longest drive on a 5 par or 4 par (one for women, one for men), be creative. That way, individual players can be recognized for their accomplishments apart from the team. If you do this, write me back and let me know how you liked it.

This is excellent advice. I am printing to pass on to the others planning the event. I think this might be the way to go. I will let you know for sure if we use it and how it goes. Thanks!!!!

I am not an expert on golfing, but my dad loves to golf and he loves to watch gold on television so I will give suggestions from what I hear from him,and what I see on television,I would say it would probably be a good idea to have a raffle for something and give the money from it to charity,I would also suggest that some good prizes would probably be gift certificates to places or maybe some new golf balls or something like that.
